March 17, 2003 -- A 44-year-old movie theater manager fondly described as a 'mama's boy' by his family, was killed by an alleged drunken driver on the Grand Central Parkway yesterday - just five minutes from the home he shared with his mother.
José Borges, who worked for the United Artists theater in Farmingdale, L.I., was driving to his Briarwood, Queens, home from his job at about 3:40 a.m.
Right before he got off on the westbound 168th Street exit, he was slammed from behind by the driver of a gray car. Police said Borges' red Ford Taurus careened out of control and plowed into a tree.
Borges never regained consciousness and was declared dead at Mary Immaculate Hospital a short time later.
Police said Juan Gonzalez, 30, of South Ozone Park, rear-ended Borges' car before crashing his car into another tree about 100 feet away.
Gonzalez of 122-38 150th Ave. was arrested at the scene and charged with DWI, criminally negligent homicide and reckless endangerment. He was unharmed.
'He was a mama's boy,' said Joseph Germain, Borge's cousin. 'He loved his mother more than anyone in the world. He was completely devoted to her.'
'And she was devoted to him,' added Nedege Decastro, another cousin. 'José was just five minutes from home. He just had five more minutes to go and he would have been home safe with his mother.'
About 30 relatives gathered at the Borge's comfortable two-story home to look after Borge's mother, Erika, 68, who suffered a stroke several years ago.
'Now she has only a few months to live. I'm not talking about physically. I am talking about emotionally. She can't and won't live without him,' Decastro said.
