On July 10 2001 my best friends 21st Birthday we had planned on going out we had a DDriver assigned as we ALWAYS do. My mother has always said I will pick you up I dont care what time it is where you are how old you are nothing I wont even ask any questions.. JUST call me. But anyway. About 1 am the morning of her Birthday I heard sirens... hmm didnt really think anything of it because I live off of Hempstead TPKE which is a busy road. I went to bed and the next morning I woke up to my friend calling me Crying Saying there was a bad accident last night. Steve is dead. Steve was a friend from school. He was on his way home from his girlfriends house and was only 2 blocks from his house when a speading white mini van with 3 guys from NJ plowed into him doing 100 MPH. Steves car spun around hitting a pole leaving his car in 2 pieces. They said he died on impact and I hope he did so that he didnt have to suffer.The car he was driving was an old caprice. Not a small car. His best friend was in the car behind him and saw the whole thing happen. The friends car was actually lifted off of the ground from the wind of the impact. Steve borrowed his grandmas car that night so all of my other friends who 'cruise' hepstead tpke stopped and whatch them take the body out not even knowing who he was. When the police went to his house to tell his mother what happened she didnt believe them and said Stephens car is right there..... Hes not dead hes sleeping. It was truly the sadest thing. I had to go to a wake of 20 year old kid who was in college who still had a whole life a head of him. A kid who never even tried a SIP of beer cause he was straightedge. because of someones stupidity. I Hate Drunk Drivers and I think they should be prosecuted to the fullest extent.
They just passed the law saying Nassau County can not take away someones car if they are driving drunk even though it shows a large drop of accidents since 99 when it was started. Its acctually doing something. I believe that Drunk Drivers should go to jail and never be able to get a drivers license again. Why should they have to KILL someone to have to be put in jail. I tell people who I have just met I will pick you up at 4 am as long as you dont get behind the wheel of a car and that goes for any of you guys on this board. You are all my friends and I will pick u up.

P.S. Taxi cab has to take you home if u are to intoxicated to drive and if you dont have the money to pay for it the rides on them.

PLEASE dont drink and drive and encourage all of your friends not to also. for the sake of all others.

Kristin your story, too made me cry. I am so sorry and you are a great girl too say what you did. I am the same, I'd pick anyone up at any time, so long as they didn't drive drunk.
