Salon question

Salon question

I am going tomorrow for my first ever trip to the hair salon and have a few questions.

1. I am going to get highlights and was just wondering if it would be a problem if I had styling product in my hair? I am assuming that they shampoo you and then highlight, but I am not sure how it works.

2. Generally, how much do you tip the shampoo person, colorist, and stylist?

3. I am going to Ted Gibson Salon. Has anyone heard or been there? Any feedback would be great.

I've never had highlights so not sure about that ...

I tip the shampoo person $3 and the girl who cuts my hair $7 (which is 20%).

actually....dirty hair is better when you are getting any type of color....at least that is what my stylist always tells me. So they wont wash your hair until its time to rinse out the high lights...after they rinse the highlights they will probably throw in a toner...then you will sit under the dryers for about 15-20 minutes...then you will get shampooed and conditioned.

The tip for the Shampoo person....depends on how much work they actually do....if they actually assist the colorist the whole time $10-15...if all they do is wash...then $5-8.
Since you will be with your colorist for about 2-3 hrs I usually tip $20...usually the colorist and stylist are the same person...(but people tell me I over tip...I guess that just comes from yrs of waitressing.)

Re: Salon question

I used to manage a hairsalon.

They will not shampoo you until after they do the highlights. So, it might be better if you didn't have any product in your hair.

I never really had a shampoo person, but I would always tip my hairdresser 20%.

This last time, I had a shampoo girl, so I have her $1 and $5 to my hairdresser.

My total was $30. Maybe I should have split the tip differently...not sure. When I managed the salon, the shampoo girls never got more than $2 for a tip.

Have a blast! I love going to the salon!

1. I am going to get highlights and was just wondering if it would be a problem if I had styling product in my hair? I am assuming that they shampoo you and then highlight, but I am not sure how it works.

It is OK to leave product in your hair. Depending what type of product they are using, the colour may hold better on *dirty* hair. They will wash you after highlights, unless you are getting a base colour first.

2. Generally, how much do you tip the shampoo person, colorist, and stylist?

It depends. If the sylist is just cutting and styling between $ 7 - 10. The colourist I would give a little more, b/c highlights take a while & need to be checked regularly. The shampoo girl $3 - 5, depending on how invovled she gets with the colouring process.

3. I am going to Ted Gibson Salon. Has anyone heard or been there? Any feedback would be great.

I have not heard anything, but I am sure you will have a great time.

Post some pics when you are done

Re: Salon question

My highlights were put in on dry hair. I would try to avoid using product on my hair since the chemicals could mix and have a weird outcome. The colorist should ask you about it though.

I tipped $5 to the shampoo girl, 10$ to the colorist and $10 for the haircut.

No getting around it, it's not cheap.

Thanks ladies!!! I have no idea how much the basics are going to cost so I'll just take a big wad of cash!!!! Thanks for the general ballpark figures!!!! Wish me luck!!!! I can't believe that I am going to let anyone else near my hair with scissors.

Re: Salon question

i always tip 20% and then give a few dollars to the shampoo girl as well. i give more to the shampoo person when i'm getting my hair colored than when i just get it cut because they spend so much more time washing and rinsing your hair.

i get foil highlights...

they put the highlights in as is in your hair- no wash... I also heard that color takes better with 'dirty' hair... i alternate with a half head and full head...

After a certain amount of time, I get the highlights washed out and they put a toner/basebreak in my hair to even out the overall color...stays in about 15 min.
After that is done, I get that washed out and then they wash my hair-shampoo/conditioner.

Then its time for cut and blowout...

I tip my colorist/hairdresser about $25
I give my shampoo girl $5 sometimes a little more....
