Anyone do a sand ceremony instead of a unity candle? I want to pour the sand behind a picture of us. Anyone do this and can help tell me how?

hmmmm sounds pretty cool!!!! What about a large, square vase from ac moore? You can probably lightly spray the photo with 3m or the elmers version and then stick it to the inside glass of the vase facing out. Then you can fill up the vase with the sand behind your photo.

Im not sure but I like the idea of the sand ceremony. Do you do it at the church in place of the candle one?
Thanks

Re: Sand ceremonyinstead of Unity Candles?
Yes, it's in place of the candle. I like it because it's a keepsake we can keep in our home forever. Below are some pics I found.
A friend of mine actually did this. She said they each poured a different colored sand in so the colors blended together and signal unity and a melding and joining of two spirits and hearts. I had never heard of it before she got married last year.
This is what I found online... --------- The hottest new wedding trend is actually not new at all! Couples have been using sand to symbolize unity for many years, and sand ceremonies in the US are starting to feature these ceremonies in addition, or more often in place of, the unity candle ceremony. It probably started in Hawaii as brides and grooms would stand barefoot on the beach. At the right moment in the ceremony, they would reach down and take a handful of sand from beneath their feet and pour it into a single container. If you're thinking of incorporating a sand ceremony into your special day, you've come to the right place.
Many couples use the same color sand as the accent colors for their wedding- i.e. if the bridesmaid dresses are light blue, then the gentleman uses light blue and the bride uses white, or vice-versa. Order plenty of the sand and use as accents on the reception tables, even in the flower vases. Small containers with colored sand make the perfect backdrop for shells, decorative rock, or shiny costume jewelry- depending on your theme. Layer the bride and groom sand colors in decorative clear plastic or glass containers and use to accent the food tables. Many people find it helpful to order a sample pack of sand to be able to choose their colors. Order with plenty of time- we ship on Tuesday and Friday and are closed for many holidays. We are rarely out of stock of any color. Choose a wide-mouthed container (a wide-mouthed florist's vase works well) for the ceremony, then you may transfer the combined sand later into a permanent display container. Following is an example of wording for the ceremony. Plan to have soft music playing during this part of the service.
UNITY SAND CEREMONY
After the minister reads the statement below, pour two containers of sand into a third, wide- mouthed, container simultaneously: _______________ and ______________, today you join your separate lives together. The two separate bottles of sand symbolize your separate lives, separate families and separate sets of friends. They represent all that you are and all that you’ll ever be as an individual. They also represent your lives before today. As these two containers of sand are poured into the third container, the individual containers of sand will no longer exist, but will be joined together as one. Just as these grains of sand can never be separated and poured again into the individual containers, so will your marriage be. If children are a part of the new family, the sand ceremony can involve them also. Some families choose a different color for each member. (This can be tricky -to get colors that complement each other. Lots of different colors together end up looking dirty and brown from a distance.) This is much safer than having small children handling lit candles!
-------- If for whatever reason you choose not to use a Unity Candle during your ceremony, the sand ceremony can be a beautiful and meaningful addition to your vows. Simply find three containers, one for you and your fiance to pour the sand into, two for each of you to pour the sand from. You can find coloured or plain sand at most craft stores. After the officiant reads the text below (or any text you choose) pour the two containers of sand into the third container simultaneously. You may wish to leave a small amount of sand in each containter to symbolize that although you are now joined as one, you each remain individuals.
_______ and _______, you have just sealed your relationship by the giving and receiving of rings and the exchange of a kiss, and this covenant is a relationship pledge between two people who agree that they will commit themselves to one another throughout their lives. The most beautiful example of this partnership is the marriage relationship. You have committed here today to share the rest of your lives with each other. Today, this relationship is symbolized through the pouring of these two individual containers of sand one, representing you, _______ and all that you were, all that you are, and all that you will ever be, and the other representing you, _______, and all that you were and all that you are, and all that you will ever be. As these two containers of sand are poured into the third container, the individual containers of sand will no longer exist, but will be joined together as one. Just as these grains of sand can never be separated and poured again into the individual containers, so will your marriage be.

didn't the Bachlor or Bachlorette do this before? Expect theirs wasn't behind a picture, it was in a tube and there were different colors to reprent different things. I can't remember who it was - I want to think Jen or the firefighter

Thanks. Now I just have to figure out how to pour the sand in from the top of the shadow box. Do they sell shadow boxes that open from the top, or am I going to have to cut a hole in it?

i looked and i couldn't find one. if you decide to go with the picture frame, i would suggest that you diy it. you would have to drill a hole where you want the sand to go in through. you would also have to put the picture in first and seal it, so that sand doesn't get in front of the picture. i would also seal the frame VERY WELL because you don't want sand to leak out.
you'll also need a funnel so as not to spill sand all over the place. oh, and a cork to seal the frame.
i'd be willing to make it for you, if you're interested
