So we were set on Sandals St.Lucia when we saw some fine print in their catalog 'Couples must consist of one man and one woman' (something like that). So now, we're not so sure we want to go to Sandals. I think I'm going to write them and tell them that thier bigoted policies lost my business. Does anyone know of an all-inclusive that isn't bigoted?
Anyway, i just thought I'd spread the word. It might have some effect on your decisions.

Re: Sandals --bigoted!!!
Marymoon..you just touched the nail on the head..only some resorts allow that sort of thing. But dont think that its 100% supported..it just appears that its OK On the surface. Living in the islands is not the same as visiting...you get exposed to different information and experiences...most of the people are poor and need the $$$ generated but that doesnt mean they support it . Or are strong enogh to fight these developing corporations.
But there is a HUGE difference between Racism and Homosexuality...But I wont get into that here because religious beliefs gets into that and I just dont want to go there....
But whats great is that we do have choices and thats the root of this issue..there are other options available to ALL>

JMO but if gay people can have their gay cruises and gay resorts that don't allow straight people, shouldn't we be entitled to the same rights?
I don't mean this in a bad way, but I have a friend who is gay and he ALWAY'S goes to gay resorts...in the poconos, maryland and upstate. He and his boyfriend are going on a cruise in the next year and are looking specifically for a gay friendly cruise. He does not want to be in a 'couples' place, he and his partner would not be comfortable in any of those sort of situations. I am only saying this because I don't think homosexuals want to spend their vacation time in heterosexual situations, they may not be able to 'act natural' and may have to deal with heterosexuals making comments or getting upset. Not that I am defending Sandals in particular, I didn't even think about that when I saw it on their website (they are a traditional honeymoon resort and that is how they made their name), I think they are doing the same as most resorts. Hedo is 'swinger friendly', DH went years ago and was propositioned numerous times to 'swing', he didn't...but he said it was sort of uncomfortable and he spent the rest of his vaca on the 'prude' side. Better to be informed before rather than after is all I say.
I agree with both of you. IMO i would go to Sandals and understand their policies as much as i do not think it is wrong to have all gay cruises and hotels. If homosexuals can have their own hotels and cruises so should heterosexuals!

***?! Realize most of the caribbean islands are not open to the alternative lifestyles as others are that's the main problem, if you want to contact the owner of the sandals resorts it's butch stewart who also owns air jamaica airlines, good luck

I'm not trying to start any outrage! I just wanted to see what other people thought, and put it out there for anyone who might want to know.
ETA: FYI For some people, racism is a prt of thier religious beliefs

Personally, I don't see the difference... a hotel policy of barring homosexuals, or heterosexuals, either way, is just as wrong as restaurants that barred blacks from patronage years ago. 40 years ago mixed relationships between blacks and whites were deemed illegal, most likely because it made people 'uncomfortable'... 40 years later, we are a more enlightened country (generally) and realize that the discomfort of the masses is not a legitimate reason to bar people from doing something that clearly is not legal, nor hurts anyone... I honestly don't see the difference. My hope is that 40 years from NOW, people will be saying how ridiculous this country was for the way we treated homosexuals...

Re: Sandals --bigoted!!!
I dont think its outrage happening..merely offering an explaination...
And in regards to religious beliefs I was only talking about my beliefs and how those beliefs have shaped my opinions on why homosexuality is different than racism. MANY religions condem Homosexuality but few recognized religions openly promote racisim. At least widely recognized ones anyways. Usually those are the ones that hide and preach in secret....but I am not here to give a religious lesson of any kind..just enlighten those who may be unaware of different culture beliefs and understand its not meant to be causing outrage of any kind. Just serving as a guide for what type of couples are 'welcomed'
Not all countries are liberal and thus exclaimers on things such as hotels are warranted so that we can all make an informed decision

Oh, I know you weren't trying to cause outrage! I was just saying I wasn't trying to make everyone get out pitchforks or anything!
I really appreciate your imput. It helps to have a different perspective and consider things from al angles. I still think that, after hearing all of the sides, I can see some reasons, but I still don't think it;s right.
As far as religion Mormons for example...well the book of mormon is a scary thing, I tell you. and there are a lot of mormons in the midwest...ahh

its funny you say that, i was just talking with my fh today(who sometimes pops on the boards) and he was saying he never gets hyped up on whats being typed on here because its not personal...you cant show emotions and the real full person on the internet.... i would think we all know that this is a board to express ideas and opinions and to get help and clarification on things, to better ourselves

ugh. That is horrible. I cannot believe that any business would write that. i didn't know much about them but this would definitely prevent me from ever going there.

Re: Sandals --bigoted!!!
One could argue that only accepting couples and not singles could be considered just as discriminatory. As would a resort not accepting children. The same goes for a gay resort not allowing heterosexuals. Although I may not agree with their policy, I do understand why they might have it. Calling them bigoted is a little harsh though!
In my resort, we don't allow anyone under 25. The purpose is so that we don't get groups of prom or college kids coming out to party. Of course if a 23 year old couple comes to stay for the weekend, I wouldn't turn them away. It's just a deterrent. I am wondering what Sandals would do if a gay couple showed up at their check-in desk? I highly doubt they would turn them away. Then again, who knows?
It is their policy and if you don't agree with it, than you should not patronize them.

Re: Sandals --bigoted!?!?!?
Maybe they put that in there so they don't get groups of pepole - It's supposed to be a couples only resort - They probably but that in to avoid having big groups of people - Like a crew of 22 year old kids or something - i'm sure if a male/male - female/female COUPLE wanted to book a vaca there - it would be perfectly acceptable -
