SATC and the whole Alex 'slap' and selfish thing sparked a conversation last night...
..between a friend and I.
With regards to old relationships, what was the final nail in the coffin for you? Meaning what did your relationship in, and sent you packing for good?
For me, in my last relationship before I met DH, it was when I found out that my ex drove right past my mother after she had a car accident and he was driving by and saw her. He felt 'weird' stopping to help her because we had a fight the day before, and he didn't know where we stood. SO YOU DRIVE PAST MY MOTHER WHEN YOU SEE SHE HAD A CAR ACCIDENT?
I guess you can tell where we stood after that converstation!

Well I have only had 1 boyfriend before my husband. It was a pretty good relationhip for most of the two years, but then he started acting weird, not spending as much time together and LYING!!!! Well one night we were at his apt having dinner with friends and he was acting especially cold- I went to lean on his shoulder and in front of the other couple he said- LEAVE ME ALONE.
I was like I do not need this crap!!!

The nail in the coffin for my last relationship (2 year relationship) before FH was being picked up late on my B'day to go to dinner, opening my present which was a gift certificate to see the imprint of date and time was why he was late. He promptly dropped me off after dinner and I spent the rest of my B'day night alone! That just solidified how little he thought of me and our relationship and we broke up the next day.

The last time I broke up with a long-term boyfriend, I did so because of a lot of little things. All of these little things had to do with reliability in one way or another. He was a total workaholic, and that took its toll on our relationship. He never called or showed up exactly when he was supposed to do so, he forgot my birthday once, etc. I figured that if his work meant that much more to him than I did, then there was really no point in pursuing the relationship...
There's nothing wrong with people being devoted to their work, but I personally get frustrated when work takes over a person's life to the point where s/he ignores relationships and friendships.

It took me a few times to really hammer that nail in.
The relationship before FH was about 5 years (lived together for 2) of many breakups because my ex 'didn't know what he wanted' or he always 'needed time'. I stayed with him more out of convenience - I wasn't faithful, so it wasn't love - we just had a lot of fun together...but nothing that would constitute an *actual* relationship. We were young - I was 19 when we met, he was 22.
The final swing of the hammer came when he - yet again - didn't know what he wanted and I finally did, at that point. So, I walked and that was that.

I had 2 serious long-term relationships b/f FH .. and plenty of little ones in between (ugh.. so happy to have met FH.. I waited a long time for the right guy!)
Different things 'broke the camels back' in each of those relationship, but predominantly it was always the lack of respect given me by my 'ex's' that always pushed me too far. I always 'gave gave gave' and often got nothing much in return. My friends would yell at me about this constantly. In retrospsect, I cannot believe I tolerated it so often.
The breaking up point in my last relationsip occurred while we were on vacation in Vegas. Just the two of us, and he decided that staying out EVERY NIGHT all night playing poker and sitting getting trashed was far more important than spending ANY quality time with me. He'd sleep off his hangover all day when we could have been doing things together. I might as well have been alone -- so I chose to be!!
I had it - I dumped him right in the middle of the Bellagio and made him get his own room.

My final nail in the coffin with my ex of 5 years was finding out he was cheating with a 'friend' of mine.... Needless to say that was the nail in both of their coffins!
Re: SATC and the whole Alex 'slap' and selfish thing sparked a conversation last night...
I am awful at breaking up with people...i would rather piss them off and make them do the dirty deed....
well I was kind of broken up...but we were still talking...and he asked me to go out to the movies...relunctantly I agreed...it was getting late and I didn't have any plans...when he arrived...my friend called and she was out and the guy I had a crush on in college was there...so I faked being sick (I know childish)
I told him to go home and got ready...when I was leaving the house...who do I see driving by...this guy!!! I lived on a dead end street!!! He was driving by to see if I lied to him!!!
that just freaked me out...the only way I got rid of him was moving - changin my phone number and email!!
(btw...the coolege crush turned out to be a big loser too )

Well, I only really had one boyfriend before FH, and our relationship was pretty much over, but we'd still talk and still see each other sometimes. He was kind of verbally abusive, so it was really bad. One night though, I hung out with current FH, and we hooked up, and my ex called my phone in middle of night, and I didn't even hear it to answer it since I was with FH. He got all mad and angry all of a sudden as if he knew, but once I got together with FH, I didn't even pay any mind to him anymore.

the final straw was when I found out that he had been married before (hmmm...how did that slip your mind to tell me) and then not knowing if he was divorced at that point. I dont play games like that...so I said see ya buddy!!

I had a long term relationship before DH. We were together 8 years lived together for 5. I realized it was over when I wanted to get married and he still didn't know if he was 'ready'. If you don't know after 8 years the answer is no you don't
I am so happy now though

My last BF before FH was a guy I worked with. We fought constantly, and I actually left the job in the hopes of improving our relationship. Once we weren’t working together, I realized I didn’t like him, period. He was a total loser – he was always “sleeping” every time I called him, and he always made me pick him up for dates! So one night when he was 2 hours for one of the few dates he actually picked me up for (he overslept ), I got into the car and told him I was breaking up with him. He didn’t seem to care very much, which was a relief. He asked if he could still take me out to dinner that night, and I let him, but after that I didn’t see or speak to him again.
And then a couple of months later I met my FH and the rest is history!
ETA: After telling this story, I feel like a loser for going out on a date with him more than once!

ALong this same line, there was a really great article in the month's O Magazine about the '7 Signs it's time to Move On' and how to know when the relationship is over.

For me it was ore of a realization - I was living with the BF at the time but I met some guy on the train and told him I had a roommate

I have two criteria for getting out of a relationship ASAP.. no questions asked.. no excuses given.. no apologies needed because the relationship is DOA at that point.
#1.) infidelity.. no forgiveness. None. #2.) physical violence.. can you say.. ' I'm outta there.' Completely unforgivable.
Thank God, I have never run into any of these. I know friends who have. I would never want to experience that hurt/betrayal.

My boyfriend before DH was a relationship that I fell into out of fear of being alone and on the heals of a broken dream with another man. He was nice in the beginning, and I craved nice. On the outside he seemed the 'perfect' boyfriend but after a few weeks it started to go south- but I hung in for 2.5 more years- again out of fear of being almost 30, unmarried and wanting so badly to 'make' it work. It just got worse and worse. Finally, something just snapped inside me and I decided that I was lonely IN the relationship and so unhappy- being offically alone couldn't be worse. That breakup was on of the best days of my life. It set me free from so many things. Not long afterwards I started dating Scott and found true happiness.
