I am getting married in March and we are sending 'save the date' cards to people next month. I think 4 months is sufficient. We are only sending them to my fiance's family in Ireland and a few others that may have to plan for flights etc.

We sent them in November for our May wedding. We live in CA, and all family lived in NY, where we were married.
Send it to everyone, even if they know that your getting married, this way everyone has something to keep on there fridge until the invitation arrives. You give everyone enough time to plan ahead.
I just sent our out a few weeks ago for our June wedding. I basically sent them to family and some of my parents close friends as well as my bridal party. I did include hotel info with that as well. I got them done from kinkos and there was 50 in an order so I have extra to send out if I need to.http://www.concierge.com
