Girls, my FH and I are paying for this wedding ourselves and I was just wondering if any of you have moeny saving tips for me.
We've opened a checking acct together and are depositing 500 a month into it each ... but i feel like we are still going to be behind ...
So ladies, thank you all for the wonderful advice... I fully intend on doing some of them. I went out today and bought two boxes for cereal (2 fo $4) and that is what im having for lunch for the next two weeks!
Thanks ladies, I will let you know how the money saving goes!

Re: Saving money
Since I started working in Financial Services, I have become the QUEEN of saving money. Here are some tips!
Spend money with cash. Whatever change you have at the end of the day, dump it in a change jar. It accumulates so quickly and you end up having extra bucks.
Live on a budget. And do things on the cheap. If you love coffee, make your own. Buying coffee every day can add up! Look for cheap entertainment. (And free ones too!) Want to see a movie- see a matinee. Want to go to dinner? Go out and get two appetizers as entrees- the best money saving tip ever.
For gasoline, As soon as your car gets to the half mark, fill it up. That way you end up spending 35 dollars a week as opposed to spending about 70 every week and a half. Once your gas gauge goes past the half mark, it burns rather quickly.
I have more tips and can't think of any right now but if any more pop up, I will let you know!

the change thing works...at the end of each day dump it all in a jar! pay your bills and keep a small amount of spending money then DO NOT GO TO THE ATM!

Re: Saving money
saving money is not easy. our weakness is going out to eat. If we made our own lunches more often (we work 1 building away from each other so we go out for lunch a few times a week) and stayed in for dinner every night, we'd be able to save a lot more money. I don't know if you do this too but I know that it would be helpful for us.

Re: Saving money
I would say take ALL of your $$ out of that checking acct and put it into savings where it can actually make some $$... not a ton, but it def helps and you can only win by doing it that way!
I think I got anywhere between $300-500 in interest since Ive had money in my savings! The rates arent the best right now, but its better than nothing!

Re: Saving money
We also opened a joint checking and savings account so we can pay vendors from this account to keep track of stuff.
We def had to start cutting down on 'eating out' . I had to start brown bagging lunch to work (which also helps with weight loss so I can control portions)
Small stuff- mani-pedi every 2-2.5 wks instead of every week, same with threading
Def put money into a savings with higher interest to gain a little more mone on what you have (rates are not that great but most online savings still appear to have better rates than a bank)
FH makes about double my salary so we factor our contributions into that as well. I make bimonthly contributions, he makes weekly (lucky him he gets paid every week ) any other ideas ladies? We are paying this on our own so every little bit helps

Yea- some online accounts give about 4% interest. I have one at Wamu and get about 4.2%.

Re: Saving money
just put as much as you can into that savings - i leave enough money to cover the bills in my checking and then i move everything into my savings - it forces me to not be able to spend money on stupid things b/c i know i need the money in my checking for bills - i dont go for manicures anymore, pedicures only once in awhile - 1 a month instead of every other week and only b/c its summer, i stopped getting my hair colored at the salon, i havent really bought any new clothes or shoes since we've been engaged unless it was something i really needed, basically i stopped spending money on myself which ***** - but it helps A LOT - also we stopped going out to bars and things like that - you will manage - i dont know how we are doing it - yesterday i posted about how we paid out over 30K on the wedding since we've been engaged (exactly 1 year) i dont know where we came up with that money - but somehow you do it - so just have faith and really be tight with your wallet and save every single penny you can!
ets: also, this is embarrasing and funny - but i buy boxes of cereal and eat that for lunch at work - a box of cereal is like 5 bucks and lasts a week - so that saves a lot of money and i buy healthy cereals - im saving at least $100 a month buy not buying lunch at work - i used to bring salads & sandwhiches from home but that ends up costing about the same as buying lunch - eating cereal really saves me money pathetic but true

Re: Saving money
I keep our money in a savings account at ING Direct. It has very good interest rates and stops me from spending it bcuz it takes about 3 days to be able to withdraw money.
I cut down on extra spending like shoes, shopping, etc.
I bring my own lunch to work most of the days.
The change thing DEFINITELY works. I took our change jar to Commerce not too long ago and we had a little over $500!

Re: Saving money
I do the change jar also. Bring your own lunch and snacks. Pick only one or two weekends to go out and splurge. Also recycle bottles and dump in the change jar. Good luck, we are paying for it ourselves also. Its really hard.

I should have mentioned that my rates are locked. But you are right. Rates are down to about 3.25%.

Re: Saving money
Oh another thing that works- while living on a tight budget, have money in your checking that you label as 'spending money' then when pay day rolls around, that extra spending money you have left over from the last pay check gets rolled into your savings account- you can end up saving so much that way too!
And def brown bag your lunch!

Re: Saving money
hi girls, I recommend ebates if you shop online a lot. It gives you a small percentage back on what you spend online (anywhere from 1-10%) I made $70 so far. Here's the link: http://www.ebates.com/referral/0708promosuod.htm?referrerid=7mXcP1NrvOIUW899LVyfhQ%3D%3D

Re: Saving money
Thanks! I really appreciate your help!
We are pretty good at these things (well excpet the gas since we are always going to LI LOL)
We have the change jar and are hoping to get some extra cash for the HM from it. And we really don't go out to dinner anymore either or charge on cc Its debit or cash all the way ... I guess Im just worried we wont have enough money to pay for the wedding ...
I think I will start to make my budget tighter and dump the extra money into the savings for the wedding.

Re: Saving money
OMG the cereal thing. I started buying large boxes of regular cheerios (since I really do like em) and for a few days have been eating at work fro breakfast, snacking on it at desk..and if dont want to spend $$ on lunch..lunch it becomes! helps that we have a coffee machine at work (fridge with milk too) sooo...voila!
HHmmm may have to start taking note how much i save in $$ and if i end up seeing some changes in weight loss... who knows!
