Original post by littlepixie12

Girls, my FH and I are paying for this wedding ourselves and I was just wondering if any of you have moeny saving tips for me.

We've opened a checking acct together and are depositing 500 a month into it each ... but i feel like we are still going to be behind ...

So ladies, thank you all for the wonderful advice... I fully intend on doing some of them. I went out today and bought two boxes for cereal (2 fo $4) and that is what im having for lunch for the next two weeks!

Thanks ladies, I will let you know how the money saving goes!

Definitely do the savings account- I have one with Wamu that was orginally 5%, now 3.3 or so grrrrr
but Brian and I set up a joint checking/savings with them- ~3.3 %- everyone month get interest which adds up!

I think I am going to try this cereal thing too!! We also have a coffee machine at work and free milk, sodas and juices so I never spend money on that stuff ... so the cereal thing might work for me to save some extra money!

Make it almost like a game -- every time you go to the ATM to take out money, you HAVE to transfer $20 into your savings. If you go to the ATM only 5 times a month, that is an extra $1200 a year. So this will either force you to save even more money, or to go the ATM less which then forces you to plan out your money in advance which helps you spend less.

Whenever I have been low on money in my past I have done this -- one year I needed new computer and this was how I saved the money, even though I wasn't making much at the time. I used to also play a game where every fourth month I couldn't buy anything but necessary food and toiletries. That saved money will add up fast!

the change jar thing works great. Also i know this sounds momish..but use coupons at the supermarket...you'd be surprised at how you can save money on things you need in the house.

Yesterday we went to close out our CD from our E-party it was up and I didn't want to lock it up since we are going need it soon.
Putting that money in a CD was the best thing we did, because the interest on it will help us pay for tips for at least 3 vendors.

I am a HUGE fan of the coupons at the grocery store...I usually save about $20 every time I go...visit coupons.com and they have printable coupons...and look through the Sunday paper for other coupons...they have really good deals sometimes!! Also, sign up for rewards programs, they send coupons too. I have the rewards card at PetSmart and we buy all the cat stuff there and they send me a $5 coupon like every month.

The other thing I've been doing is selling Mary Kay to make extra cash. You make 50% on every product you sell. And it's not like sales, the products sell themselves so I don't ever feel like a pushy sales person...then when my customers run out of their products, they call me for reorders and I don't have to do any work for that!! If I do a class with about 4 women, I'll go home with at least $150-200 profit!! Totally worth it!! And, I win lots of prizes too, which is always fun!!!
