Saving $ on wedding?
Ok, for those of you who are trying to keep the costs of your wedding down-what are some of the things you will try to save money on and what are some of the things that you absolutely will not compromise on?

Re: Saving $ on wedding?
I tried to save money on almost everything, but I didn't try to skimp on photography. while we were modest in the package we chose, I wanted to be sure to use a reputable place, since I knew the photos were something I would have forever. The same thing for our wedding bands (rings, not music). I wanted to have something that we loved, and was willing to pay more for, since we will have them forever. The thing I am most happy about skimping on? Centerpieces. I did them myself, they cost about $20 and they were fine. I saved a ton of money that we put towards other things. I am also glad I didn't spend a lot on invitations since I know most people don't keep them after the wedding.

Re: Saving $ on wedding?
I am compromising on flowers, favors and invitations. I refused to compromise on photo/video and catering. After all, our guests will mostly remember the food, and I will probably be so nervous, I'll forget everything, so I need good pictures!!!!

Re: Saving $ on wedding?
we compromised on flowers, centerpieces, we're not having a limo or video, and i'm doing my own make-up (hated the trials and i love doing my own.) we did not compromise on our photographer or invitations. we're having a pricey band BUT its my FBIL's so we can afford it (1/3 of the price without his fee.) i've utilized a lot of family and friend's talents to keep down the price-like my favors are being made by my stepmom who is a genius with cooking and making us truffles.

Re: Saving $ on wedding?
We are compromising on flowers - cp's, we are not doing video, no favors- just a donation which ends up being less than favors, invitations - getting them through the stationary guy my office uses, making my own STD cards as well as table cards and menus, got a DJ instead of a band, looking into saving on the limos as well...we didn't want to compromise on photos and the hall - bc good food is really important

Re: Saving $ on wedding?
Skipping limos, no video, doing our own CPs, printing our own invites. Not skimping on Photos. Bought lots of stuff on ebay. good luck. it can be done, but it's not easy.

100% DITTO. To be honest, I always felt that people don't remember the food unless it is over the top good or horrific. I want my wedding to be an upscale dinner party with dancing and amazing memories from photography and video. Flowers die so I can't see spending every last penny on them.

Re: Saving $ on wedding?
We're compromising on the flowers (we're doing our own bouquets), we compromised on the honeymoon (we're going to Mexico for now - which is a lot cheaper than the other places that we wanted to go to...and then on our first anniversary, when we're not paying for a wedding, we'll go somewhere nicer!)....some things that we did not compromise on is the photos, food, and my hair/makeup. I was going to do my own makeup and hair - but I never wear makeup and never really do my hair - so I figure this is the one time that I can splurge on it

Re: Saving $ on wedding?
We did the same as many here have said:We did low centerpieces ( they were very pretty though) instead of the high ones that I LOVED.
We did a dj& mc instead of band.
Instead of a Viennese hour we did Viennese trays on each table which had cookies, pastires and choc. dipped fruits on them.
Even with about 220 @ the wedding we did cut back the guestlist.
ETA- no regrets with the choices we made
Think of what is most important for you to splurge and what you can save a few on. It will all work out in the long run.

I agree 100%. I prefer having a DJ and the flowers don't matter too much to me. However, FI and I both agreed that we wanted quality photos.

Re: Saving $ on wedding?
I am using Lenox centerpieces that cost $22 each instead of flowers....We are getting one big limo for everyone in our bridal party instead of separate limos....We are getting married the day after Thanksgiving which is always what I have dreamed of and its an afternoon wedding which saves us ALOT!!!!!

Re: Saving $ on wedding?
--I am designing my own STDs and invitations and printing them at home on paper from paper-source.com.
--We are buying the flowers wholesale online and arranging the centerpieces and bouquets ourselves.
--Instead of going with a catering hall, we are having the wedding and reception on the property of a historical society and bringing in an outside caterer.
--My dress was sheer luck--the one I loved happened to be discontinued and all they had was the store sample, which they sold me for 60% off.
--No limo because the reception and ceremony are at the same place.
--We are going with a photographer who does GORGEOUS work but is really reasonably priced because she works independently and gives proofs only (we'll have the prints for the albums done at a photo lab).
Cost was part of the reason for these choices, but none of these things feels like a compromise because it's exactly what we want. I actually like that we are doing so much ourselves because it feels more personal.

Re: Saving $ on wedding?
We are cutting costs by not having a video, my dad's friend is doing our flowers, my dress was inexpensive, favors as well. We didn't go cheap on pictures, hall and honeymoon.

Re: Saving $ on wedding?
We're getting married on a Sunday instead of Saturday. We're going to compromise on the video, the invites, and favors. I'm going to try to do as many do it yourself things as I can, but I'm not terribly crafty so we'll see!We will not compromise on the band, the photographer, or the honeymoon.
