Re: savings

We were going to use every dime saved until the wedding FOR the wedding until FH gave me a heavy dose of reality. What happens if his company down-sizes and he loses his job? What happens if one of us ever has to go on disability (i.e. six weeks after maternity leave is disability). What happens if my car craps out before the wedding and I need to get a new one or get the old one fixed? We need to have a cushion. We started a joint account this past summer that has a bit of money in it already. In addition to that I have my savings/assets and he has his. What he said makes a lot of sense. I refuse to start my marriage in debt as financial difficulties end marriages more than any other reason.

As far as age goes, you never know what can happen. Older brides and grooms may be divorced and have child support to pay that younger couples might not. That will destroy a savings. They also may have had experiences with bad credit and debt. More opportunities for bad investments. Honestly, some of this applies to me. I dont have the savings that many people my age do. Life happens.

I also moved back home when I was 26 for almost two years! It sucked, but I was able to practically save every penny! To be honest, it is the only reason why I have saved as much as I do. If I did not move back home, we would not be having this big wedding.

With all due respect, my favorite ROCKIN 06er, If I had to live with my mother. Id have to start drugs. It was not an option for me. Debt was easier. Fortunately, I cleared my debt with a second job and once it was gone, I quit the second job.

Re: savings

In general, a good rule of thumb is at least 3 months of all living expenses. Think about all your bills - rent/mortgage, utils, car loans, student loans, living expenses, etc...

You should be able to support yourselves without income for three months. Once you have 3 months set aside, you might want to work up to 6 months depending on your situation, if you have kids/dependents, etc...

Are you using that money to pay for the wedding too? If you're using it to buy a house, then you have a great start.
We are just going to barely, hopefully make the $ back that we are putting in for our wedding. So we'll have whatever that is as a start..........not much :(

We were told by in-laws to not expect to get a lot back from the wedding due to the fact that most of our guests are from OOT and they often send tangible gifts. This is why we set a predetermined amount that we wanted to have saved the day before the wedding. If we spent every penny on the wedding we would still be penniless the day after the wedding.

The wedding has taken it all. My goal is to have enough to cover rent when we get back.

Re: savings

Any $$ we have right now goes into the wedding fund. We've paid for everything in cash so far. And whatever I have charged gets paid off immediately. We should have enough in savings by the time of the wedding (3 1/2 months! ) to not have to charge anything and still have some $$ left over. We know that there is no way we are going to make back what we've spent.
