Saw something terrible on service road to LIE yesterday

I took a late lunch from work to go to the doctor for a checkup yesterday. As I was getting off the LIE, I see a silver van parked on the shoulder of the service road, the driver's side door open. Now I'm passing the van and looking in my rear view mirror to see what's going on. I see a man and a woman up against the fence on the side of the road. She's struggling to get away, and he's physically holding her. She's flailing her arms, he keeps throwing her up against the fence.

I started to call the police, but I don't know why, I didn't dial 911, I called the local precinct. No one answered. I doubled back as fast I could via backroads (one way street on the service road). As I got back, she's walking away, the guy is following her in the van. I pulled up next to her, offered her a ride, asked if I could call anyone for her. She's crying and trying to make a call on her cell. She says she doesn't want a ride but she was looking backward, frightened like she wanted to take the ride, but was afraid to. I had already dialed 911 when I was turning around. Just as the dispatcher answered, I saw a cop come screaming down the service road the wrong way. I figured he'd handle it, so I left for my appt.

I couldn't believe that! I hope she is okay, and that the guy won't ever hurt her.

That was amazing of you to stop and help her!!! I hope that the police handled this.

THat girl was so lucky you stopped. It takes a really special person to do what you did for someone you dont even know.

I know it was dangerous for me to stop, but what if I had gotten home last night, turned on News 12 and heard about a woman getting killed on the service road to the LIE? I don't know if I would be able to forgive myself for not stopping to help.

I didn't know the situation (why they were fighting, what it would lead to) but I knew someone needed to help. I couldn't do it personally unless she'd let me drive her somewhere. Then I would have had to hope the guy wouldn't follow us and hurt me too.

At any rate, the police got there, and I felt much better. Whew. It was scary, but I couldn't leave her there!

Wow! Scary! What exit did you see it??

It was great that you stopped. I think I would have done the same thing. Well, at least I would have called the cops. Not sure I would have gone back, though. It took a lot of courage on your part to do that! Way to go!!!!

It took a lot of courage for you to go back there and I applaud you for doing it. Too often people see something that doesn't look right but they say nothing and keep going, figuring it's none of their business. You may have saved a life simply by stopping and asking her if she needed help. Good for you!!!!!

A similar situation happened to my sister a few years ago. She couldn't sleep and had just gone out for a drive because it was a nice night. She went all the way down by Robert Moses beach, and it was a little worse... the woman was almost raped and was being followed by some guy... she jumped out of his car and was running for her life. My sister drove her home. If my sister hadn't happened to be driving down there because she couldn't sleep, who knows what could have happened.

I really believe that God sends angels to intervene on bad situations.. you should be very proud of yourself, you did such a good thing! We need more people like you in this world!
