Saymels Bridal in Queens

Does anyone have experience with Saymels Bridal Shop in Astoria, Queens. I plan on ordering my dress from there this week and want to know if there are any horror stories about this place. So far, I've only heard good things. Thanks.

I just realized I didn't put the year. It's not till June 1, 2001. Acutally I was hoping you could fill me in after your day! Which room did you book?

Also go to Ultimate weddings and look under songs, they give a bunch and links to the sound

I've heard good things too...the only downnote I heard was from my cousin. She was a bridesmaid and had a problem w/fittings (don't know the name of the seamstress though). The person she used didn't listen to her and was difficult. But that can be managed...who knows if that person is even there anymore.

Overall, I've heard nothing but glowing remarks! I wish you luck!

PLEASE, NO ONE RESPOND TO THIS.

I live down the block from there and have heard good things about them-- if I was staying here longer I would have looked into ordering from them but am in the process of moving to NJ so am going to look for a place there Good luck Laura

Dear Amy, et. al. There really is a difference between offering an opinion and being adversarial. David offered his credentials for a reason + I'll offer mine for the same reason. I'm 48 years old, married for 13 years, have two incredible children, and run a successful business that showcased a style of photography 10+ years ago that is just now becoming popular. The reason the background is offered is to give a sense of perspective. There really is a certain amount of knowledge that is gained from years of experiance. The conception that I don't have enough to do and spend my time on this board is simply a misconception. I like to take a break every once in a while and see if anyone is needing advice about any issues that I might be of help for. Believe me, if there is anything missing in my life it's that I'm too busy + don't have enough free time. 15 minutes a day on this board does not exactly qualify as anything but a diversion from a busy life.

When suggestions or advice are offered, they're done with good intentions to help people going through a difficult and stressful and confusing time in their lives, where my experiances might be helpful and appreciated. That is all. I've been contributing to this board for about a year now and I don't shy away from controversy. I've been a rebel in the wedding industry by being more avante garde than most of the studios + they are just now starting to catch on. You don't need to hire me to ask me a question. I'm not looking for business by participating on the board. However, I might have something to offer, if anyone would like some help. That's all. If someone says something that I think is being misunderstood, than I'll say so and offer my support. Wouldn't you like to know what goes on behind the scenes in the industry? Don't you want to avail yourselves of every opportunity to make the most informed decisions?

Karen/Laura -- Thanks for the input. I live close by and think it's the best choice for Queens brides who can't make it into Long Island for all those fittings. Thanks again!

Excuse me? Whoever you are, you don't know me so why do you resent me? Where is all this adversarial tension coming from? If you don't like what I said, you don't have to be so petty and call me a phony!

Saymels Bridal in Queens

Hi there. I went to try dresses at Saymels. My moms friend swears by them. While I was there, however, there was a bride I guess she was there for her first fitting. Now I don't know if it was the bride & mother or what, but they kept on saying, "This isn't the dress I ordered" and the sales lady said "Sure it is, you're just confused" And the bride & mother kept insisting and the sales lady kept on insisting. While I was trying dresses on, the wonam who was helping me was SO rude. It was the first place I'd been to so I didn't know any better. The woman kept on saying "You really don't know what you want, you need to know what you want" Well, that's why I was there, to get ideas about what I wanted. I got my dress somewhere else, but when my mom started looking, we went there because they really do have a good selection, and they were so rude to us again that this time we walked.

This was my experience and what I saw when I was there. My mothers firends swear by it. If you're happy with their service and with your dress, you should get it. I booked a photog. that other people on this site said was difficult but I haven't had that experience. Good luck.

Karen, where did you end up getting your dress?

I've heard a few people say that the employees are rude but the girls were still happy with their dresses. Luckily my saleswoman was very sweet or I would have walked out too!

The demo made me almost cry so I figured that was a good sign. My cousin used them for her photography and videographer and loved them.

I thought the same thing about Saymel's. They're just a few blocks from my apartment and I thought, I can walk to my fittings, but like I mentioned before, my experience wasn't positive.

If you haven't found your dress, try Klinefelds. They're in Brooklyn, and it's a bit of a treck, but if you get your dress there, they'll send a car to pick you up for fittings. Can't beat that. Plus they're nice; the woman who helped me out couldn't have been nicer.

I got my dress at Michelle Roth also. I thought they were all fabulous!!! You are right... they are pricer than picking a gown from a bridal shop, but the dress is made for your body. It is not ordered in a size and then fitted to you.

Who was your consultant? When do you get your dress?

Cathy is my consultant. She's great.

I can't remember when I get my dress! My first fitting is either in June or July- I don't have tha date with me. Are you going to the headpiece show next month? I think that's when they're having a makeup artist come in. I have to check on that though.

I ordered my gown in November and don't expect to see it until Sept. I am getting married in Nov. One month after finding my dress they had a Paris Collection headpiece show and I got my headpiece then. What is your dress like? Which designer did you pick? Cathy was my consultant also and I LOVED working with her. She was so down to earth and very honest. i put things on and she immediately said "GET THAT OFF"!!! She was great. Everything I ended up with was the first one she showed me. She knew my style within 5 minutes.

I had my make-up done when I was there for the Paris headpiece show and the woman was really nice, but very expensive. I believe it was Laura Geller. I really want a natural look, so I am still searching.

I was there for the Paris show in March, but no one said anything to me about makeup. I was actually a little disappointed when I went for the Paris show because I thought they would have make-up and they didn't, but Cathy called me a few weeks ago to tell me about the next show and they will have a makeup artist there. I really can't afford anyone they recomend but I figured I'd get some ideas.

I got a Katherine Rayner (I don't know if I'm spelling it right) and you're right about Cathy. When I met with her I had brought some pictures. (The only other place I'd gone to was Saymels and since they told me I needed to know what I wanted, I spent like a week going though magazines looking for what I thought I might want. My fiance joked that I had disappeared under a pile of magazine clipings.) Anyhow, I wasted my time with pictures, because Cathy barely looked at them. She pulled six dresses, nothing that looked like any of my pictures, and the first one she gave me to try on was the one. The same thing with the veil, I didn't want a veil but she said to try some on and she was right,it was perfect!

We are usng Jo Von also. De opted for a band instead of a DJ b/c we are only having 125 people. We are using Hank Lane for the band. We definitely would have chose Spin-Around-Sound if we were going with a DJ.

We are getting married at The Metropolitan in Glen Cove.

I chose a Domo Adami gown and veil. The dresses I ripped out of magazines look NOTHING like what I ended up with. Cathy just has a great eye. Let me know how your fittings go. Also, did they tell you what type of bra to wear?

I went to a Paris headpiece show and saw something really nice. Again, Cathy's the lady. The first one she chose was the one. But it was WAY more than what I wanted to spend. My father is a jewlery designer so he's been dreaming up designs for a headpiece. (He made my engagement ring and is also making the wedding bands/rings.) Did you get a porcelain piece or crystal. I tried on both but the crystal ones brightened up my face and the pearl and porcelain sort of got lost. It's so funny because the girl sitting next to me had the opposite happen to her. I am NOT a glitter person but the crystal works for me. Go figure.

They suggested I get a bra like the ones they had there, the corset type strappless ones with a high back. I haven't really shopped for one yet because they told me I wouldn't need one for the fitting. I am starting to look for shoes but I haven't found anything I like yet. Did you check out the places they recommended? I haven't yet. Maybe in the next few weekends. Do you have a picture of your gown? I wonder if they can get me a picture of it since I can't find anything in magazines or the net. I'd like to show it to my florist and get some suggestions for flowers. I have some ideas, but nothing concrete yet.

That is great that your dad designs that kind of stuff!!! You will have a one-of-a-kind!!!

The designer of your dress is Catherine Regher...right? Well, www.theknot.com has her dresses posted. Check and see if it is on there. Mine is. It is the Domo Adami -Daniella. I think. It is the strapless one with nothing on it.

What colors are your BM's wearing?

Wow, nice dress! I checked but mine's not on the site. I think it may be an older design or something because I can't find anything like it. The closest is Pronovias (just the skirt, kind of, but really not even close, different fabric, ... just different). Michelle is great. She is going to put cups in my dress. Mine has seams so there wouldn't be a problem. That would be awful if you could see seams. That's the grace of your dress, the smooth satin/silk fabric. Can she suggest some kind of bra that wouldn't show through? or are you going to go without one?

I'm not having bridesmaids. My parents are from Argentina and they don't have bridesmaids & groomsmen there, usually peoples parents or godparent stand up with them. I told Michael, my fiancé, and he really liked the idea, so we asked our parent to be our witnesses, to stand up for us. They were really touched. All my girlfriends said they's wear the same dress and carry flowers, though. Very funny. What are yours wearing? Did you have any problems finding dresses that they all liked? Where are you getting their dresses from?

Thanks. I am glad you like it. I think is really simple and classic. I am not sure what I am going to do yet. I would feel more comfortable wearing a bra, but we will see. Did you check for your dress on www.theweddingchannel.com? They have my dress on there also and they have Catherine Regher. I hate the fact that my dress is EVERYWHERE!!!

I like your tradition for the bridal party. I think it is appropriate for parents to stand up for you. My parents will be standing the whole time, but I am having a bridal party. I definitely envy you for not having one. Although I love them all to death...WHAT A HEADACHE!!! After months of looking I finally went by myself, picked out a dress and told them all to go get it. I could not babysit anymore. Everyone has too many issues. I was luck that they all ended up loving what I picked, but if they didn't...too bad. And, it is black...what is not to like?

We already booked our video with JoVon and it is $1800 for digital, but I have no idea who is doing it. I think it was only that price because we used them for photography. I guess I should do some checking up.

I received my headpiece today and it is BEAUTIFUL!!! I am really happy with it. I had forgotten what it looked like. It is porcelain orange blossoms and crystal.

When are you going to Tahiti. I'm also going to Tahiti with Renaissance. I leave 6/5. I'm so excited, it sounds absolutely fabulous!!

So, after spending like 2 hours on line, I've discovered that my dress is designed by Catherine Rayner. She's a UK designer. Has a website but my dress is not pictured, and I can't find it anywhere. Oh well, I'll keep looking.

Hey Karen- Just thought I would fill you in...Michelle Roth has their own lingere dept and they are going to make my bra. NO WORRIES!!! Except, they will probably charge me $250 for a bra. What do you think?

can you give me directions on how to get there? i remember going there as a little girl with my grandma for craft supplies, but i have no idea where it is. i'm coming from port jefferson. thanks! happy planning, leighann

Have the dinner beforehand, or just have desert (cake/coffee) afterwards since a full dinner that late may be too heavy before bedtime :-)
