I just got back from the doc and she told me that my thyroid test came back abnormal. I have to get another test this weekend and if it is the same, I will need to see a specialist. My cousin has this and I know it causes a lot of stress in your life.
I have been experiencing some of the symptoms: weight gain dry hair dry skin
UGH! Just my luck, right before my wedding I find out I have something that is going to cause me to gain weight:
Does anyone know anything about this? TIA

Re: Scared
it depends on the type of thyroid problem...hypo makes you gain weight and be sluggish...hyper is the opposite...
if you do have a problem..once they even out your meds and get you on the right dosage you should be fine...
it's actually very common..nothing to be scared about

Thanks. I think I just freaked for a second but I am reading up on it now and it doesn't seem as bad as I thought.

I have hypothyroidism too, with those same symptoms. It's very common but you'll just have to control it with meds and be extra careful when you're pregnant. FM me if you have any questions! My mother is a human medical encyclopedia so I know all about it.

Re: Scared
Please don't be scared.
This is becoming all too common, especially in young women. I'm convinced that it's something atmospheric or environmental...there's just no other explanation.
I had a borderline hyperactive thryroid, but only found out because I was having a choking sensation, and it turns out there was a nodule. It took a few tests, sonograms, dr visits, etc to narrow down the root problem...but I went to an endocrinologist who did an aspiration, and since then I have been relatively fine. I don't even have to go yearly now, but bi-annually.
My sister just discovered that she has the same issue, so now the process is starting all over again. Another case where she found out by accident, it showed in her CAT scan from when she passed out a few weeks ago. It's ridiculous, no family history before us two. There's something going on out there, I swear.
If you need a good endocrinoligst, I would suggest looking to Dr. Klein at LIJ in Lake Success. He's the best of the best, and the head of endocrinology at NYU. An expert in the field. I would highly recommend him to anyone going through this.

i wouldn't be scared. FMIL an FSIL both have thyroid issues and they are under control and on the right meds for it not to be an issue!

Re: Scared
I am going to say you have hypothyroidism. I had hyperthyroidism and I lost ALOT of weight, but I was shaky and irritable and NASTY. They did blood work to find out what was wrong with me. Then I had a radioactive iodine treatment and it shrunk my thyroid. Unfortunatly it shrunk it too much and I now have HYPOthyroidism. I gained 25 pounds in a month and a half but am on Synthryoid now. I go back next week to get bloodwork done to see if my synthroid needs to be adjusted or not. My dr is GREAT!!!! He is located in nassau. FM me if you want his information. HTH GL

If you've been experiencing weight GAIN and your thyroid is abnormal, then going on medication will actually cause your metabolism to speed up. You will lose weight initially.
Wait until the 2nd test comes back. I had an abnormal test a couple of months ago but when they re-tested me it turned out the original test was a fluke and I was fine. No need to freak out yet.

Don't be scared- my brother has this problem, and he gained weight. Once he found out what it was and his doctor put him on medication, the weight came off and everything seems fine. I hope it works out that way for you as well! Best of luck and let us know!

Re: Scared
Sounds exactly like hypothyroidism.
I experienced the same symptoms when I was 17. I didn't know what was weong, I was depressed, gaining weight, etc. After blood work and a trip to the endocrinologist, I found out I have hypothyroidism and Hashimotos disease (they go hand in hand). So I have been on medication for almost 10 years, and have been fine. It is just hard to lose weight.
If you are diagnosed with it, don't worry. You will be ok Just take medication as directed and stay positive!
