You have nothing to worry about. I don't work in the city, but I go there all the time. I always map out my trip before I go. LIRR.com has the subway map. Just map it out first and before you know it, you'll know the trains like the back of your hand.

I was scared to go in by myself at first (and I'm not in LI, I'm in queens!) but you get used to it. The first time is a little scary but it's smooth sailing once you know where you're going!

Re: scared of NYC commute

As long as you make good time between your LIRR commute and the walk or sub ride to work, you should be fine!!
Congrats and good luck!

Re: scared of NYC commute

dont worry! youll be okay. if it makes you super anxious...take the train out on the weekend with your fh or a friend or someone and do the 'commute'...meaning take the train...then the subway/bus or whatever to get a feel of where things are.

Re: scared of NYC commute

I just started the commut a month ago.. I was so nervous too... YOU'LL BE FINE! It's nothing. A month later (now) I'm zipping around on the subway like it's nothing. The commute itself doesn't take much time to get used to. Sleep on the train in the morning (it's like an extra hour every day) and then read or listen to music or snooze on the way home. I say do it while you can... you'll make a butt load of money and you can't beat the shopping on your lunch break. And maybe even now and then you can meet me and Kim (kimnsteve) for lunch, right Kim!?

Good luck!!

i live in nassau county right now and take the hicksville train, but after i start working, i will move to an apt. so i am wondering if i would be better off living in queens or maybe new hyde park.

Are you scared of getting lost...or scared because of terroism. I am more afraid of the latter. I've been traveling for years and never thought twice about it until 9-11....now I think about getting stuck all of the time!

If you need directions this website is great:

Dont be scared!!!
I went into the city ONCE in my life before working there...and it was for a class trip.
I live in Bay Shore and commute everyday.
The subways are pretty easy also.
Take the job!!
You'll be fine

Re: scared of NYC commute

I take the NYC subway train EVERYDAY, 5 days a week from Queens to to my Manhattan job and back home. At first I was scared and nervous that there are soo many people getting on the same train at once, but after 3 years I'm so used to it and I love the train ride. My ipod, magazine, newspaper, its great. Sometimes in the morning I cant wait to get on the train for the ride. I love the LIRR also, I take that sometimes, but it a little pricey. I took that when the strike was going on. DOnt be afraid, if you love the job and the pay is good, go for it

It would be a shorter commute, depends if you want to move there.

Re: scared of NYC commute

i hate to admit it, but a major fear i have is terrorism. i just feel that if someone wanted to blow up a subway or bus, there isnt much anyone can do about it. i am surprised it hasnt happened yet. i feel terrible for thinking that.

Re: scared of NYC commute

Sorry to crash... I live in NYC, and have for 5 years now, and there is definitely nothing to worry about in taking the trains... Just a note for your timing-- You will need more than one subway to get from Penn to the upper east side if you are going above the mid 50s (where you can take the E to 53rd and 3rd)
