I don't want to be debbie downer here but this is what's been going on in my parents neighborhood...slightly different tactic. i think they are calling it the '7-minute steal'. the robbers knock on your door and if NO ONE ANSWERS, they assume you aren't home and then break in, either front or rear door. its reportedly done in the afternoon 3-7 pm and they are in/out quickly.

Just be careful and keep everything locked, including your cars. this stuff freaks me out. :(
