Sometimes I see certain posts and it occurs to me that lurkers with bad intentions could probably easily gather quite a bit of personal information here... possibly even enough to help them with identity theft!
One this one page someone is able to get:
-- your DOB -- the name(s) of the bank(s) you use -- the college you went to
I know I'm probably one of those people that are overly paranoid about identity theft - but doesn't that scare anyone else a little?

Re: Scary thought -- is it just me?
Wouldn't they need a SSN or name? Or am I being naive?

DOB and college are harmless without a SS number
i wouldn't post my bank, but that's me

Why, does anyone know each others last name? And most people don't even use their first name in their screen name or profile

I didn't think about that with the banks post, but it did occur to me with the birthday post. I didn't know why. . .I just thought it wasn't a good idea. . .

This is true, but at one time or another, alot of people have told or been called by their first names in a post. Granted, last names are ALOT harder to come by, and that's a good thing.

I don't know how easy it is now, post 9/11, but prior to that you could get someone's SS# with only their name and birthdate. My girlfriend worked for a real estate broker and could access to this at any time and without explanation.

I hear what you are saying but I don't know, Most people really don't share enough information to figure out anything.

Jimmysbride, you make a good point -
I never really thought about it that way, and even though I often forget (because I look at this as a realtively 'friendly' community) we must also remember this is a public forum that anyone can access just by logging onto liweddings.com
I have been thinking more and more recently that I'm over exposed on this site - makes me pause to think about taking things down perhaps

Only a couple people know my last name from having been to my wedding, and I trust them. My first name used to be in my profile, but it is so common (Elizabeth) it wouldn't do anyone much good. And there were about 30 people in my graduating class in college with my first name. About 1/2 of those from Long Island!

Re: Scary thought -- is it just me?
and most of you post your wedding date and location in your profile, sometimes your names
all a person needs is a wedding date and a name and then go on to fortunoff, look at the registry and get the full name and then you have the bank info to go along with it

That's wrong, you need a last name to pull up a registry.

I had posted a few weeks ago about some of the people here posting the LAST names of your MAID OF HONOR and BEST MAN. CHECK YOUR PROFILES! I have seen quite a few on here.

if you have the bride and groom's first name from LIW, you can make an educated guess
type in the two first names and you get a list, just match the names to the date

Exactly... I didn't want to post it, but that's what I was thinking. And I'm sure you can get a registry pulled up with just the first few letters of the last name, and some, with just the date.
There are times that I've been to (baby registries in particular) where I didn't know the last name of one or both people and I was able to pull up their registry at the store without it.

Re: Scary thought -- is it just me?
Another scary thought is that this thread may be giving some people ideas of how to get your identity
Thats why I may post my birthday, but never the year, never my bank and never my last name
