Schmooze or Lose?

Schmooze or Lose?

What do you think will help a person get ahead in a workplace- being competent and experienced or being good at the art of 'schmoozing'? Or a little of both?

DH is working on his MBA right now and he is a really smart guy but since he started the program, he has learned that SO much of business is networking and schmoozing.

Left to their own devices, his fellow classmates and he would sit and talk about how hard the class was and the midterm was a killer.

When put into a social situation with spouses and SO's, people talk about OTHER things and realize that one wife has something in common with another wife and relationships are formed and those people are more willing to do favors for you in the future.

I do think you need to have some smarts, though. You can't BS everything!

At my job it's DEFINITELY who you SCHMOOZE. You can be dumb as a doorknob but kiss the azz connected to the right person and it's scary the powers that can be handed to you!

Success takes a little of both. It's obviously important to be competent (or, better yet, talented) but it's also important to 'sell yourself.'

There's a Quote 'No one cares what you know, until they know you care' ... bascially you have to schmooze & get noticed before anyone's going to give a cr@p what you actually know ... by then, you better know something though!

So I think it's both, but more of schoomzing. I see it everyday. The people you know will help you get to where you need to go MUCH more than what you actually know.

As an engineer, I have been in school with and worked with people who are brilliant, but have no social skills whatsoever. In order to deal with clients, and to advance as a manager, one must have a decent ability to communicate and articulate ideas. I don't know if I would classify that as schmoozing, but in my field, you definitely need a combination of both.

I am going to try and remember that quote. I really like it. I have been thinking (and and stressing about work things) and about how I may need to work on my 'image' a bit. I tend to just keep my head down and do my job, but then I see people with less experience and knowledge getting ahead.

Unfortunately the big mouths and the ones who kiss @$$ so to speak (and I don't neccessarily mean in a bad way) are the ones who get noticed. It's not like school where your '100%' on your math test is enough to earn you an A in class ... you have to get noticed by people first and then let your work speak.
