our nyc school calendar for next year just came out and I am freaking out!!!
We always finished school the last week of June, usually on Wednesday... so I planned my wedding for June 27th. That Saturday after... or so I thought... next year our last day of school is
FRIDAY, JUNE 26th!!!! what the hell am i gonna do????
can i take off the last 2 days of school? do I call out sick??? it will be obvious!!! do i work and suck it up!!..the worst part is... I am having a day wedding on Saturday!!!
help!! help!!! what do i do?!!!
by the way my principal isnt very nice.. she is bipolar!!! i can't change the date.. i started booking vendors and i put deposits down!!! UGGHHH!!

don't worry, the last week of school is usually fun stuff, the kids don't do any work so you won't have to prepare lessons -- you can focus on your wedding from 3pm and on and isn't the last day of school usually a half day?
Everything will work out, my wedding is the same weekend and FH is a teacher and I'm looking for a full time position so I'll be in school until that Friday as well -- it will be ok

thank you... but at least you have saturday!!! i was thinking of getting married on sunday!!! i don't have half a day Friday.. we have conferences...which are so stupid...maybe she will let me go after the kids dismiss... i just want to make sure I have my down time...
my family will be coming form out of town too!!! and then there is the rehersal dinner!!!! i am beginning to panic again!!!

if it is too late to change your date, maybe tell your principal now that you have to take off?
we also played date-roulette and set our wedding date before the academic calendar was set for 08-09. i was expecting classes to start Aug 25, but there was a slight possibility that they might start Aug 18! I emailed the registrar who told me they were planning to start the 25th but nothing was officiall confirmed yet and wouldnt be until ~ Jan of 08. We set our date in May of 07!
(I didn't want to do the weekend before for many reasons so we took our chances). We also booked our honeymoon to come back the 25th (planning to miss the first day of class, and hopefully not the first 6 days of class) and lucked out big time. When the academic calendar came up classes are starting the 27th (a Wed!) for the first time in years. So... guess I'm not missing the first day of class anyway. I can buy my books Tues and actually do my reading for the first day of class.
The only snag is that one of our groomsmen is going to law school next year and if he comes here, orientation starts the 18th. He could either miss the first day, or fly out the night of our wedding.... or he might end up at UCLA and they might have a different start date. sooo... we'll see what happens

maybe an exception can be amde as you knwo a year in advance- it is the last day of school

I would just speak with whoever you need to first & tell them the situation. Your getting married! People cant be that horrible to u! Maybe that last Friday they will actually give you! Dont panic until you know!

If you are tenured just take a sick day. We are always told in my district just take a sick day instead of going through a personal day in case you're denied.
I know we can get a personal day if we are getting married. Just keep your attendance good for the year and take it on that Friday.
I booked Sunday so I would have the extra days before. I teach on LI and we finish Wed or Thurs I forgot. I figured everyone is off on Monday anyway since most my friends are teachers.
It will work out. Luckily you have plenty of time

dont panic - everything will work out - it is over a year in advance - i cant imagine that they will give you a hard time - and im sure leaving after the children are dismissed isnt too terrible - and if it is a conference that you miss - i am sure you can get a copy of a memo that can sum up everything that they went over - no reason to stress out too much - worst case scenerio you could just have a terrible stomach ache that friday that would prevent you from going to school

prob depends on the district, but mine is willing to be flexible for weddings. are you tenured? if so, you can call in, and regardless of how obvious it is, there's little they can do about it. If not, I'd go the honest route and try to get permission. I have seen people get the last day or two off--as long as they complete all their end-of-the-year duties--for vacation.

Are you tenured? I would definitely speak to the union but, I really don't think it's going to be a problem. I would try to get approval for the personal days first. I would be amazed if they deny you. I am a teacher on LI and the second to last day of school is usually our 'team' day and the last day of school is 2 hours long for report card grades only (plus checks, key return, etc.). Good luck!! If you have good attendance for the rest of the year, the last two days shouldn't make a huge difference.

I would take the last few days off. And put it in early. If your principal has a problem tell her the truth and say that you have things planned that day and need the time off.
Btw, this year you guys are getting out a little bit late too (I work with HS students at a hospital internship program and noticed a difference from last year). I blame the Regents schedule.

Take a personal day. Our UFT rep says a personal day is for business you can't take care of after school. I would think this counts. Also - my last day of school is always a half day so if you go in, at least you wont be with the kids all day long.

It's your wedding day and nothing should get in the way of your plans, especially not your bipolar principal.
Take off the last two days and have no worries because this day will only happen to your once in your entire life.

i will be tenured as of next year... thank god!!
i told my union rep already and he was like 'oh no'... but worse case scenerio, i call out sick the last two days (even though it will be obvious)... and then she will put a letter in my file ... big deal ( so he says)
last year our social worker got married on 8/26 so she requested to take some personal days for her hm....it was DENIED.... DENIED...can you believe it!! She went anyway of course...
i am all about being honest and request my personal days (which i am entitled to).. but at my school when you try to do the right thing u get screwed..
My principal likes to punish us... i can totally seeing her changing my grade and making me switch classrooms... and tell me 2 days before school starts.
i actually did tell my principal the wedding date a while ago (she asked right after she heard i was engaged), i told her the date and my reason why, i picked it, she was happy....but this was before the calendar came out and i know she forgot already...
hopefully she will be taking her meds!!! and she will be in a good mood!!
the only other concern ihave is that i teach kindergarten.. and i hope that i wont be missing graduation!!!
i purposely picked this date so i wouldnt have the aggravation!

Dont stress...my school is finished june 27th of this yr and im getting married june 28th so needless to say im not taking any time off. The last few days are not stressful, especially the last day which is just handing out report cards. Im actually happy im working til the day before...as i see it, it will help me avoid stressing over things i cant control! hth!

If you really feel you want the day before off ( which I totally would) talk with your Principal soon and explain. If tell her/him far in advance (hopefully) they will be kind and give you no problem....You can explain to your students why you cant be there the last day.

Sorry I just read what you said about your Principal. Ive heard of jerky Principals denying requested time off before weddings...just call out sick...(I work for the DOE also lol) YOU ARE ENTITLED...and theres nothing she/he can do!

I am getting married on the 20 and I also thought that it would be around a Wed. So now I cant take 5 days off to go on a honeymoon. But.... They have to let you take off for a wedding. The school has certain events that they have to let you off such as a graduation, a death of a wedding.... (the only diff. is that they make you use sick days for weddings)
