Schwarzenegger's repeal on driver's license law stirs protest
What do you think about this??
LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) -- Latino advocacy groups have called for a one-day economic protest on Friday to mark their opposition to California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's annulment of a measure that would have allowed undocumented workers to get driver's licenses.
Some of the groups' plans include work stoppages and school walkouts.
Mexican American Political Association President Nativo Lopez said it is an effort 'to send a very clear message to Gov. Schwarzenegger, business, civic and political leaders that if our people do not receive driver's licenses early next year ... we will continue to call for economic boycotts, full days of boycotts, work stoppages, and school strikes.
'We will tinker with the economy of California because Mexicans and Latinos make up 45 percent of the work force.'
Lopez admitted that it would not be easy to gauge the protest's impact.
'This is the beginning of a movement that's going to take a long time,' he said.
Other Latino groups, including the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles, are against the idea of pulling children out of school for the day.
Last week, Schwarzenegger repealed Senate Bill 60 -- legislation that would have allowed undocumented workers to obtain a California driver's license.
His predecessor, then-Gov. Gray Davis, signed the bill into law in the midst of the gubernatorial recall campaign.
Schwarzenegger campaigned against the bill, saying the initiative pandered to voters -- an issue he now appears ready to re-examine.
'The governor will look at the issue when the regular session of the Legislature gets under way in January,' Schwarzenegger aide Darrel Ng said Thursday.

Instead of doing this why don't they send the undocumented people BACK. THEY ARE HERE ILLEGALLY

Re: Schwarzenegger's repeal on driver's license law stirs protest
I am Hispanic and Texan. My family's history goes all the way back in the Texan/Mexican History. I’m sure at SOME point my ancestors had to get US citizenship. My family is American Indian by heritage and my mother’s family is from Spain immigrated to the US two generations ago.
I am going to be blasted for saying this but... its how I feel.
If you want to come to this country and work and make money and give your children a better education and forth and so on, then you should be documented. If not then it's unfair to those who go through the same process.
I heard a story about a Mexican couple in Penn that are here illegally and have been for years making money and living their lives. They have a house and so forth. I'll assume they worked hard to get this far. Now, here's the clincher. They left their children in Mexico for fear they wouldn't make it here in US and wanted their children safe. All right I’m with this so far, but THEN they decide 'I want my children'. Ok, still with you. Instead of doing the legal thing of admitting they are here illegally (which I HOPE their employers already know) and going through the process, they spend $5000 (which I can't even come up with myself at the moment) and paid for their children to be smuggled into the country. The kids got caught during the smuggle. Now.. do the parents fess up or let their kids get sent back?
I hate to say this but I think it’s just not fair.
Free education, free work, free healthcare, free homes.. my god, most of them live better than I do. I work my butt off and I’m very proud of where I am and how far my family has come. I recognize that these people are working their fingers to the bone to make a better life for themselves and their family. I have also seen them cross the border in droves while I lived in Texas.
My DH Jim is a permanent legal alien.
I know we are the land of the free and so forth but we have to draw a line somewhere, Where? I don’t know. I don’t think we should just leave them out to dry, but it’s a problem. They should be documented. I’ve lived years in a place where criminals were hard to track cause they were wanders from Mexico. This is a VERY sensitive subject to me because I’ve seen both sides and its just frustrating.
My parents have brought me up to believe you have to do things the right way but still care for your neighbor, per se. Currently my parents teach the Mexican immigrants in the Iowa farmland basic English so they can understand laws and rights due to them by our country. My parents transport these workers back and forth far distances to seek and obtain free medical attention they badly need. Our family houses and cares for the children of these migrant workers during the peak seasons so they can make more money and support their children during the off seasons. For what? At any given moment one family finds out they’ve been living free for so long that the government is coming to get answers to why they get the free ticket and *poof* they are gone by morning. It’s a close nit group. They warn each other of this. So they keep moving along, breeding as they go (huge families) and taking advantage of the government’s good will. Our family continues it’s support because we just can’t find it in ourselves to just turn our back.
Still, if you don’t like it, leave. I’m torn but aggravated.
I just can’t justify all the benefits of being ‘undocumented’ versus the harsh realities of coming to our country legally. Even within my own office we have literally dozens of Visa types all represented. The girl I work with had to go jobless for 3 weeks as her Emergency Visa was cleared.
*Sigh* No really good answers No really good solutions.

Cause American finds that cruel. Go figure.
Yes, the bottom line is send them back. Unfortunately we as american's make that almost impossible.
Hell look at the Elian Story and remember this FATHER wanted him BACK!
Re: Schwarzenegger's repeal on driver's license law stirs protest
I'll give you the CA perspective...
migrant workers get paid CRAP!!! I'm talking $5-10 a DAY!!! why does this happen...the gov't turns its head...b/c documented residents will not take these jobs...when they can get $6+/HOUR...
when you go to the grocery store - do you get angry when produce is too high...well think how much higher it would be if they had to pay the workers 10x as much...so the gov't is also turning its head b/c they want to make sure average Americans are fed...and can afford these staples...
Now you are going to say...its very unfair to pay Mexicans so little...It may be if they lived in the US...but in Mexico $5-10 a day is A LOT of money!!! and they go back to live with their families in Mexico...
ETS: so let them be able to drive in the US to do these jobs that none of us want to do...and keep the produce affordable
