Sea Sickness

Ladies who have been on cruises, what did you use to prevent sea sickness?

I was thinking Bonine , but can you drink on this?

Does it work?

what do you recommend?

Also, I keep reading about ginger pills....do I take that with the bonine? lol

I haven't been on a cruise, but my sis went on on for her HM ,and I know she gets sea sick when deep sea fishing... However, she said the cruise ship is so large, that you don't notice the waves as much. So, I hope it won't be a problem for you!!

I'm sure you can take dramimen (sp?) for motion sickness though if you need to. You might want to talk with your doc though because most meds can't be combined with alcohol.

i always take bonine... the cruise ships movement may def make you sick... its a slow side to side movement and can def throw off your equilibrium...

i start taking it before i even board bc once your sick and you try to take it, its really not going to alleviate the queasiness... trust me... ive been there before

i do drink on it and its never been an issue and doesnt make you sleepy

Re: Sea Sickness

ps: anythhing with ginger will always help... bonine is more of a preventative med while ginger will make the nausea go away if you do happen to get sick

I have never been on a cruise but spend my summers on a sailboat and have chartered a sailboat in the USVI many times. I swear by the Sea Bands.....they are over the counter and are little bands with a bump in them. THEY WORK. One trip I took them off cause I was feeling good and figured I didnt need them.....ended up sick and put them back on and was once again feeling better.

That way you dont have to worry about the drugs and mixing with alcohol

I would recommend seeing your Md and get a prescription for scopolamine patches. You put behind your ear 4 hours prior to getting on the ship and then change it every 3 days as needed.

Do you think I should take both bonine and ginger at the same time?

i disagree.... i used those on my first cruise and i couldnt see anything close up like the menu! it was actually quite annoying... i did something else to me that i cant remem at the moment... there are other meds out there with little to no side effects that i think would be better

ginger is natural so its not going to hurt you or interact with the other med in any way... so if youd feel better having both, i think thats fine... i mean, im no doctor, but i cant see it hurting

looked this up:
Medications and Natural Preventatives
Ginger is a natural preventative. It soothes a queasy stomach and has no side effects. You can get it in pill form, tablets or powder, as ginger root in many herb and health food stores, or as pickled ginger slices at Japanese food marts and even at many Japanese restaurants. Most serve it pickled with sushi, hand rolls, and other of their dishes. It puts out the fire that too much wasabe can start.
Some doctors recommend that you can take it 12-24 hours before, as preventing sea sickness is easier than curing it. Somewhere from 1 gram up to 4 grams per day of powdered ginger is recommended. Some studies seem to indicate that ginger is more effective in the reduction of vomiting and sweating than nausea and vertigo, although they reduce those symptoms as well. You can try gingersnap cookies and ginger ale, although their lower ginger content may not be as effective. They do work for many sailors though.

not a prob, you will be fine as long as you PREVENT it .. like i said, once it happens, you'll end up stuck in your room huggin the toilet...

my 1st 2 cruises, i didnt prevent it and got sick both times on the first night in the dining room (they are usually at the ends of the ship and you feel the most movement back there so it makes sense)

I don't get seasick, but I know they sell wrist bands that help if you don't want to take medication.

I've been on 3 cruises and have never felt sick at all. The ships are so big you will rarely even realize you're moving.

i've been to sea on some research boats and on some pretty rough seas and i used three things...ginger ale, the sea sickness wristbands (i bought them in target!) and dramamine. i've heard though that on a cruise ship, it's so big you don't feel the ocean movement. and the best way to combat it, it so be outside a lot, and fix your eyes on the horizon if you feel a little sick. but i drank ginger ale like it was going out of style! you'll be fine!!
