What should I use, wedding wire or old school post it notes on a giant board? Or maybe just plain excel?
Let me know what worked best for you!

did it take you forever to type in each guest's name and info? I wish there was a way to just import it from my list I have already made in excel

I used Excel since I had everyone's names in there to begin with.
I sorted the list into a section for the bride and a section for the groom.
Then from there, I sorted those lists into groups that would wind up sitting together.

The place gave me a chart and so I make photocopies and used their charts (I wrote with pencil of course) and then I made more detailed lists with paper and pencil!!
It worked for me!!!

This is what I did it was easier. Then I copied and pasted the people's names into a program to create the placecards.

I used excel too because all of my names were in there. I tried wedding wire and didn't have the patience to put all of my guests in there and then it was acting all wacky on me so I gave up.

I started using the one on this site, but then I just converted it to Excel because we were getting too many changes in RSVPs and I found it easier to just drag the names instead of having to use the drop down boxes.

Re: seating charts - what program to used to make yours!
I did it old school. I do them all the time here at work for large meetings and seminars so for me, the seating chart was actually the easiest part of wedding planning.
I had done my invitations, guest list, etc., in QuattroPro (wordperfects version of excel). Then I ran all the guest names off on labels which I stuck on index cards.
I was allowed to have between 8 and 16 people at each table so looking at a layout of the room, I just started putting people into piles that I then rubber-banded together.
For example - my mom sat at table one - so in the table 1 pile, i had her index card, my sisters' cards, etc....
It was super-easy to make last minute switches and I could just pick up a pile and see that I had 10 people at table 7 but 16 at table 8....
