Seating question - bride/groom family split completely?

FH and I were wondering about this - we know at the ceremony, the bride's family sits on one side and the groom's on the other, but what about the reception. Do you HAVE to split them up? We were thinking that we'd put my parents' tables near me, and FH's parents near him, but for the rest of the people, can we just put them anywhere?

We want people to get to know each other and not be segregated... what do you girls think?

We staggered the tables throughout. There were people from his side and people from my side on each side of the room.

we split... all of his family on one side... except one cousin because my sister requested that his cousin and his wife sit at their table... which worked out because we wouldnt have had room on his side...

we had my family and almost all of our friends on the other side...

his best man and a few of the GMs (that werent family) sat on his side

We did this, too. We just figured it made more sense that way. DH's family was visiting from Ireland, my family from all over the country- I doubt they came all this way to make new friends.
