I went to public school. I had a great time and got a great education. I don't know much about private schools, but I don't see anything wrong with public so when the time comes they will most likely go to public school.

but of course it depends on the district I live in

I hate to say it, but it depends on where we end up living. If we live in a good school district, I’d send them to public school.

I am a product of the NYC public school system and I can say from my experience that I would be hesitant to send my kids into that system…

You all make a good point. It depends where you live. I based my answer on MY highschool

i was in the private school system from kindergarten through the end of college. i missed out on a lot of extracurricular activities, and even things like trips to colleges, sat prep, etc. but i was lucky enough to stay away from a lot of the crap that went on in the local public schools. DH on the other hand loved every experience of public schools. so i guess it does depend on the area.. but if i had the money, i think i'd lean towards private.

FH and I went to public schools all our lives, and we turned out just fine. And he was in a very rural, very poor district. Obviously there will be exceptions to this, but I think that a student with motivation and desire can do well anywhere, despite the odds or lack of resources.

They are going to Catholic Schools. lol, I think we had to sign that somewhere to be able to have our wedding mass.. lol

But Dh and I are both products of Catholic Education. If we can afford it we will try to do the same for our children.

But also we have no control over where we will be living due to the military so we can't always depend on the public school system. So, I'm not knocking NY public schools.

How come you missed out?? I attended Catholic School.. but my parents didn't want their tax dollars wasted so I did many things at Plainedge. I took their SAT course, Drivers Ed and did some extracurricular activites at the public school as well as got us a late bus so I could run Track and cross country for my high school...
My brother only got the benefit of attending Plainedge/Seaford HS Summer School.. lol

it really depends on where you are...but teachers are paid a substantial amount more at public schools...and have great benefits...so there is an attraction for good teachers to be in public schools

I am really torn on this. It will all depend on where we live as well.

I went to public school and I turned out great!!!! I was always in the honor or AP classes. I think I had a very well rounded education.

My DH went to Catholic school all is life and he turned out great as well.

My concern is the difference in curriculum that both offers. My reading lists and course of studies I believe were more extensive than DH's. I do not even think my husband read one Shakespere play- how do you go 4 years of highschool without reading shakespere. Also, I found that public schools start preparing you for regents and stuff earlier than catholic schools. Of course this is what I have seen, so correct me if I am wrong.

My sister and my cousin who are the same age, one attended public, my cousin attended catholic. My sister had to tutor my cousin at times because she was always ahead of him.

I went to public school and I feel I got a good education. Of course, I almost always lived in a great school district and my h.s. was specialized. In fact, I remember when I was in the 5th grade my teacher always made fun of the catholic school, suggesting that it wasn't up to par with my school and if you couldn't cut it public, that's where you had to go.

FH went to catholic school and hated it.

We will try to live in an area where the best public schools are located so that we can send our kids to public school. But it depends on the area.

If we stay here in this neighborhood, we will not have a choice other than to send them to private school. The public schools in my area are actually dangerous and was the reason why me, my sister and brother had to go to private all of our school years.

Although, in better areas, I would definately opt to send them to public. I think the education in public is much better if you are in a safe district.

Dh and I had this discussion the other day again. We both decided that our children will go to Catholic schools from pre-k to atleast 5th or 6th grade. Then we will send them to public, of course all depending on where we live at the time.

that's so weird. i went to a catholic school and we were always (what seemed like) years ahead of public schools. i remember my friends in the same grade talking about homework that i did in the previous grade. i always felt that the education was far superior to a public school, but just felt the after school programs/activities were lacking when compared.

Re: sending kids to private school

I think back then private school were a tad better education wise. Now, I feel totally opposite. I have a younger brother who is now in his junior year of hs and as I watched him in private elementary school, he was learning nothing compared to his friends in public. Public school always seemed to be more 'hands on' as well. Well rounded whereas private school was very for lack of a better word..small and closed.

Although, now I am not liking the way teachers have to teach in public school, they are always changing teaching methods...imo..not letting teachers teach the way he/she wants and is good at. Which I have a problem with as well..

So I dont know what the answer is.

Re: sending kids to private school

I think it depends on WHY you would choose one over the other.

IMO - the standards in becoming a teacher are MUCH higher for public then for private. You do not need a bachelor's in education to teach in a private school, this is elementary, HS may be different. I'd rather my children be taught by someone who has a degree in education and has student-taught, etc. No OFFENSE to ANY private school teachers, this is just my opinion.

However, on the flip side, if I were looking for discipline or if I lived in a bad school district, I'd probably send my kids to private school.
