Senseless poll- Help me pick my name-UPDATED

Original post by tourist

OK- all logic aside, I can't decide if I want to hyphenate, change or keep my name. I am getting my marriage licencse tomorrow.

Help me pick!

FYI- my name is easier to pronounce & spell than his.

Thanks for all your responses. Updated on page 2

I was just in a wedding and the bride dropped her middle name and so her new middle name was her maiden name and her last name became his.... kinda cool I thought:)

You are so darn cute Tourist!

I would say take his since you are not totally opposed to it.

I don't like hypenating just because names get so long after that (At least mine will).

Honestly, I am constantly in debate about this, and it has come to be a 'cosmetic' decision.

Some names sound great hyphenated, others do not. how do you like the sound (and the written signature) of all the possible versions of your name?

I am taking his name for family and personal life (he would be heartbroken if I did not) and my kids will keep it.

But professionally, if I ever go back to acting, or become a therapist, I will use my maiden name. I like how it sounds for a career woman.

What does your FH want you to do?

I had no intention of switching mine, but I found out that it was really important to my FH that I change to his name. He feels that's a special bond.

It wasn't as important to me not to change as it was to him for it to change. So I decided to change it. Plus it is a pretty name together and people always mess up my last name.

Re: Senseless poll- Help me pick my name

ok..without being too longwinded:

I said to 'Pick a random name' ..although the county clerk idea was quite temptin

We considered this for a while...not so much random as my mother's maiden name. I grew up with my father's name (very anglo-saxon) but with my mother and her Italian family. I always wanted people to know that I was Italian, even though I look like the Scotch/English that my father contributed. SO, we considered taking her maiden name for both of us. His name is also quite English as well.
In the end, we have decided to take his name: because he is the only blood son of his parents and our children will carry the name (his brother is adopted) and my family has SO MANY boys with the Italian name, that there is no danger of it fading...not to mention that all of the names are not rare in there resepective origins...by any means.

I'm a little late answering this but I plan to keep mine.

I will however have an alias of Mrs. FH name.

All my degrees and registrations are in my name and it would be a hassle to have all of it changed. Grad school even wants some notarized letter saying the degree was lost/destroyed before they will give me a new one. Name change is not enough?

ETA: on vacation in July FH was registered as Mr. Kdrainey. LOL They even put up a sign in our room saying welcome back Mr. & Mrs. Kdrainey. He did not like the name change after 30+ years but he played along with it. Now he totally gets why I do not want to change my name because of that trip.

Our kids will have his last name.

Anyway- since getting engaged I have had a slight change of heart. I decided to hyphenate BUT I will never use our two last names together- it will just be my legal name. So, in the appropriate company I can be Jane Maiden, or Jane Married. But wherever, my legal documents will say Jane Maiden Married.

Our two last names together make us sounds like a law firm. Mine is three syllables and 8 letters, his is two and 9 letters.

lol- I thought of the same thing you posted, but I thought that might be confusing.

FH is TOO sweet- he doesn't have ANY thing to say because he wants it to be my decision.
Maybe I should call my mom before we go .

AHH, it is only 11 hours away!

I actually think it is less confusing-- only confusing when you try to explain it

So-- what happened? I am guessing you already went by now..

Thanks for all your respones. It is surpising how traditional everyone is, but I guess it is a trend lately.

I like the 6 people who said pick the clerks name!

I decided to hyphenate.

Like Nsgraham & Randella, though that may just be on the marriage license. Who know what I will do socially, At work I will keep my maiden name. I really dislike all of the clients I have (published professors, yuck!) & don't feel the need to tell them I am married. I will just be 'on vacation' for 2 weeks.

For those of you whoa ksed, FH didn't have any opion, he said it's my name & I AM the oent ha tis goign to have to say it & write. He did call me Mrs. Longname a few times today though!

I'm not sure what I will do with my drivers license & SS. That's another problem for another day.
