September 11

September 11

I was just cheating on LIW, reading WeddingBee (I just discovered it and was just checking it out...now I'm back!!!). Anyway, I noticed that a lot of girls there are having their wedding on September 11. I then came back here to check if any of us are on 9/11 and no one on the official brides list is.
Is it just me or is it strange to have a wedding on 9/11? I know that you can't cut out every date when something bad happened, and there will be babies born on that day, but if you had a choice, wouldn't you rather not be celebrating on such a nationally sad day? Maybe it's just me, because I knew a bunch of people who died that day, but I really don't get it at all. Thoughts?

I wouldn't personally for family reasons, but if you're looking to go the cheap way out, I heard most places consider September 11 for holiday prices.

I personally would never pick that date, its just too much that happened that day that I wouldn't want to have it as my wedding date, just me personally

i wouldnt do it, but not everyone has the same connection to 9/11 that people who live in NY did...... i can also understand why people would pick that day...

I think people look at that day differently then others, and some people cope with such tradgedy by trying to make it a happy day.

I personally wouldn't have my wedding that day b/c of family members that were lost, and probably wouldn't attend a wedding rather then being with my family, but I guess we can't judge if people do it that day!

Re: September 11

My second cousin is getting married on September 11th... we have a lot of cops in the family and none of them are going because A) most of them have to work and you need a hella good excuse to get off that day or B) know someone who died and usually go to a memorial service or C) we involved with it themselves and it's a tough day for them.

I guess people get married on Pearl Harbor Day and D-Day and it's no big deal because we're so far removed from it but IMHO I think it's too soon...

I get why people do it, the pricing is so much better than day. I think we could have gotten our hall for like $20-30 less pp or something like that... but for me I couldn't do it, I couldn't celebrate the happiest day of my life on the day one of the biggest tragedies we will have seen in our lifetime took place.

Re: September 11

I think 9/11 affected NY much differently than it did the rest of the country ... yeah, other states are upset and disgusted by what happened, but i think it's kind of how we feel about the Haiti earthquake ... it's terrible but we move on with our lives.

I do agree with everyone here though that i'd never get married on 9/11 ... it's just too sad of a day (and I didn't even get affected by it directly!)

i would never do it...

but someone in illinois or nebraska, etc. may have no objection to it bc i'm sure states that far away weren't as affected as people in ny/nj

Thanks, girls. I guess that makes sense...and is a good explanation for why girls on there would have it on that date, but no one here would. I was just thinking we were better.

I also and am going to a wedding on September 11th. I personally wouldn't have done it because of the memories attached to that day but they didn't lose any family and friends and weren't negatively impacted by it therefore they didn't see anything wrong with saving some money on that day. This is fh's friends that are getting married that day. They did save alot of money but I would rather spend more.

MY FH is a FDNY fireman so we would never think of celebrating anything that day

When i was trying to pick a date in Sept - FH and i spoke about this. Neither one of us lost anyone close but we took into consideration our guests so we both decided to do it the weekend after.

Re: September 11

My H.S was blocks away from wtc and we could see everything. It was very traumatic as a witness, I can't even imagine the pain as a family member.

FH and I both work on a project for rebuilding of the transportation hub at the site so for us, we don't want to be reminded of that day or work for that matter.

However, like other girls said, some people were less affected by it than others and in a way, I think it's kind of nice to claim that day for themselves and make it a new happy memory.

Re: September 11

I personally wouldn't do it; my dad and uncle are retired from the NYPD and they had to work there in recovery efforts. Neither of them will tell us what they saw; I'd prefer for them to keep it that way.

It also touched our family personally. Not to mention people that we'd be inviting.

That being said, while we wouldn't have booked that date, if someone else chose to do so and I was invited, I'd still go. The first few years after 9/11, I didn't do anything fun on that date. But now I just try to do something fun...it's not that I don't want to think about it; I think about it EVERY SINGLE DAY. But there's nothing to be gained by dwelling on it either.

Last year on 9/11, I remember that it was my first LIW G2G - bullriding!

Re: September 11

I avoided that weekend...its a day of remembrance and I would have felt a little uncomfortable having my wedding that day.

Maybe it's cause we're NYers that we feel differently about it?

I totally agree with the ladies who said being a NY'er we truly relate to 9/11. My dad was part of the recovery effort and I would never want my Dad's thoughts drifiting back to that day on my wedding day.
