Series EE bonds

Dh has a bunch on bonds. Most from back in Communion-Confirmation time 1985-1987
from 50 bucks to 500?? How much are they worth now in 2003? Should we cash them out and put it in our IRA or do they actually acrrue more interest?

Re: Series EE bonds

they will gain interest up to 30 years (so prob about 18 years after they mature)

my mom told me it is best to keep the bonds until the 30 year time...but of course I cashed mine in...lol I went to my bank and sat with someone at the desks and they figured it all out for me...but the majority of mine were from the 70s

Re: Series EE bonds

My mother just found bonds of mine that had a face value of $850. Most were series EE. They were mainly from 1978 when I was born. Well, I entered them on that website and they are now worth $2400!!! I could not believe it. It is definitely worth hanging on to them.

Re: Series EE bonds

you should compare the interest you're receiving on the bonds to what you could make if you invest the money.

Granted, investments carry risks that the bonds don't have. But depending on the bonds interest rate & the stock market, cashing out and investing the money could be a better option.

given the example above $850 maturing to $2400 over a 15 year time period is approx. a return of 7%. Thats not so hard to beat...
