i heard that MANY places (grocery, retail, gas stations, restaurant etc..) charge a service fee for using a debit card. the charge DOES NOT appear on the receipt but does appear on the bank statement.
has anyone heard this?

Re: service charge for using debit card
I've heard it, but I use my debit card constantly (instead of a credit card) and have had no problems. I think that if it were to happen it might be the bank charging you (it's like going to an ATM that is not affiliated with your bank), not the grocery store, who I would think would have to disclose it. But, I'm no expert.

Re: service charge for using debit card
I use my debit card almost exclusively, I hardly ever carry cash. I've never been charged a service charge by the point of purchase. My bank used to charge me but they don't any longer.

Re: service charge for using debit card
When I use my debit card, they ask debit or credit and I tell them to use it as a credit card - I never know if I'm doing the right thing.

If you say credit when they ask debit or credit, you don't get charged. Usually, if you are entering your pin, you are going to get charged.
I always do credit -- same thing, you just don't get charged and don't have to put in your pin.

really? i am always confused when the ask 'debit or credit?' i usually say 'debit'. i have this horrible vision of receiving an enormaous bill one day for all my years of using the debit as a credit and never really paying.

Mine does this too. As long as I use it as a credit card, there's no fees.

Re: service charge for using debit card
I know that if I charge someone's card as a credit rather than a debit, I pay a higher fee. Maybe some places turn that back on the customer.
There are some gas stations, that when you use your debit, they hold an amount that stays on your account for a few days. I learned the hard way when I kept bouncing checks because of the $30 hold!
