I need help on something. My reception hall is charging me an 18% service charge on my ceremony & outdoor CH (we had to pay extra for each of these). Does this seem right to you?? I thought the service charge is only added to the price that you are paying per guest. Thanks for the help!

Re: service charge on ceremony & CH...?
We were married at the hall....and we didn't pay a separate service fee for the ceremony. It was just added to the bill, after they figured the price per person.
not sure about the CH service fee they are charging you. maybe you should ask your hall to explain why a service fee is necesasry for these things

Re: service charge on ceremony & CH...?
Good question.
I know about the service charge for the CH, shouldn't matter if it is outdoors or indoors, but your venue is charging you extra for being outdoors ?
I have to check my contract to see if the service charge applies to the cermony as well.

yeah exactly, first he added everything up then told us the service charge. Did he do the price per person and give you the service charge from that and then ALSO added up the ceremony and CH and did a separate service charge for that? then yeah that would be weird

Re: service charge on ceremony & CH...?
Exactly. I am getting charged 18% on the extra money they are charging me to have the CH outside. If I wasn't having the CH outside, I would only be paying a flate fee of 18% pr person. I am already paying $500 to have it out side - why would I be charge more services fees on top of that...??

Re: service charge on ceremony & CH...?
On my bill - they add up the price per person, then price per vendor, then they add the price for ceremony and CH, then the add the 18% service charge on to that total. Then the tax is applied to the whole total. ( which I did not know tax is applied to 18% service fee).

that is just so weird!
the way my hall did it was this:
as an example: (just using easy numbers to work with)
$100 price per person x 8.65%= $8.65 $100 price per person x 18% service charge = $18
$100 + $8.65 + $18 = $126.65
$126.65 x 100 people = $12, 665
ceremony fee: $500 x 8.65% = $543.25 (cause they did provide things like flowers and such for the ceremony, they charged tax)
Totoal cost: $12,665+543.25= $13208.25
I don't understand why they don't do the formula like this--instead of charging you a service on the CH and ceremony!

Re: service charge on ceremony & CH...?
I calculated the bill the way your reception hall did and it was $580 less than the bill they gave me......

Re: service charge on ceremony & CH...?
Are you sure it is not 18% on the total bill? 18% service/gratuity charge is pretty standard but on the total.

THATS what im thinking...the way you described it last seems fine...you said the added the ceremony, ch and pp and then calculated the 18% service charge

Re: service charge on ceremony & CH...?
Most places charge a ceremony fee, but I'm not sure about extra $ for CH outside- that doesn't see right. But, then again- I know CHCC nickel and dimes for every little thing?

That sux RH's shouldnt charge for the CH/VH to be outside, the ceremony fee yes thats understandable.

Re: service charge on ceremony & CH...?
the service fee for the ceremony may be because they have to use their staff to set up chairs and such. We are getting married at our hall and our bill is done he same way total all items and then added tax and service charge.

Re: service charge on ceremony & CH...?
I'm CHCC bride but not getting married there or having an outdoor CH....I do know the charge an extra $500 if you want to have it outside (dumb if you ask me) but I wasn't aware of a service charge on top of the $500. Is that what you're saying? Did you ask your BM why? I would think it would just be 18% on top of the total cost.
