Hello ladies: I need some advise. My 17 year old nephew was dignosed a few years back with sever dyslexia. He was evaluated by The Sylvan Learning Center and they are asking for $11, 000 upfront to help him. He apparently has a 2nd grade reading level. I feel so helpless. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Re: Severe Dyslexia - Need Help
contact BOCES and the school district- get tested through the district and certain things should be covered
school districts have lots of different services to help him - also talk to health insurance company - some of the good ones cover in home tutoring because it is technically a disability

Definitely have the school district do an eval. If the parents write a dated letter to the special ed. office the school has 30 days to evaluate, then another 30 days to have the CSE meeting. I can't believe something this severe wasn't identified earlier. Who at Sylvan did the testing? What tests did they use? Were they standardized tests or tests the center had developed on their own? As a special educator I'm always hesitant about those centers but don't discount your nephew's disability.

Great advice. There are fantastic programs out there for working with students who have dyslexia. I would def. start with his school district. You may want to tell your family member to research reading programs that are successful with dyslexic students. -Orton- Gillingham -Wilson
It will be good for them to do the research prior to the CSE meeting. If you have any questions feel free to ask. Good luck and keep us posted!

Definitely call BOCES. Does he get any special services at his school? As another poster had mentioned, there are a lot of great reading programs that the school district may provide that he would not get from a center like Sylvan.

I used to work for BOCES before working for a local district. I don't see what service they would provide...what department would you think she should contact?
