Sewing machine help

Wondering if anyone can help me. For x-mas, I was thinking of getting my SIL a sewing machine. She doesn't know how to use one so it would need to be sort of an easy, beginner one. She basically likes to make outfits (costumes really) for my neice and just thinks it would go quicker if she could do it with a machine rather than by hand. I'm sure if she got into it, she'd probably like to make household stuff. Anyone know of any good (but not too outrageously priced) ones. The one I have is ok, but it's my mom's from a million years ago so I really don't know what is good out there now.
TIA

Re: Sewing machine help

If you have a Joanns near you, you should check them out. They normally have someone there that is well versed in the different machines and can help you pick out the perfect on for your SIL!!

Re: Sewing machine help

I got my singer machine online (amazon.com) and I love it, I was a beginner when I got it too.

ALSO I would suggest Sears, they have alot of kenmore machines, and very GOOD prices, we used some in my sewing class, I think they were about $100.

How much are you looking to spend,
also check Target out
good luck

Re: Sewing machine help

Thanks for the help!!
I think I will try to get to Joanns and see if they can help.
I've seen those ones at Sears, and some inexpensive ones at Target and Walmart and such, but just wasn't sure if they would be crappy. I was hoping for around the $100-150 range.

Re: Sewing machine help

I got one for Christmas two years ago. I wanted to learn how to quilt, and hadn't used a sewing machine since home ec in jr. high. My parents got me a really nice one from Walmart. It's a Brother brand, and I think it cost around $100-150. Really easy to use for a beginner, and it has a ton of features.

Re: Sewing machine help

I got a Sears beand, about 7-8 years about. Not sure why I remember, but it was $173. The reverse button broke, and the Sears repair dept were less than helpful, finxed it and it broke again. I wouldn't buy Sears again, when there are so many other alternatives
