Share your best in-law coping mechanism

Hi all,

Like many of us (I'm sure), I am going through some pretty nasty parent/ in-law drama these days. Rather than vent and re-live the anger, I thought it might be helpful if we all shared our best coping mechanisms for when things get rough...

Mine: Yoga and trying to put yourself in his/her shoes.

I'm a grin and bear it. I say something when I feel it's big enough. I dont sweat the some stuff with them.

I have a unique advantage, they don't speak english well enough to cause me much grief yet.

I just try to smile and agree with what she says and then go home and do whatever I want... I just stopped trying to include here and started doing things the way me and fh want them.

stress has gone down significantly...

My FIL's are divorced ... MY FFIL is a doll.... him and his wife are great !!!!!!!!! As for FMIL ... that is another story .. she is just miserable at the world .... It bothers me a lot .... but FH tells me just not to let it bother me ....just like his sisters tell me the same thing !!!!! She could not stand the fact that we got engaged... ( this is a second marriage for the both of us ! ) He was so miserable before and now he is the happiest man alive ... and for some reason she is just miserable ... OH WELL !!!!!!!! So like we say if she shows up to the wedding , that is ok .... IF NOT ... OH WELL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just 'we'll take it into consideration' or 'we'll think about that' the FMIL to death. And we don't let her pay for anything. She assumed that if she gave us money that she would have a say in almost everything. She wanted to pick out of DJ (she actually called places and made appointments for HER to go to). She wanted a DJ who will play lots of Salsa music for her & her family. Me & FH want no Salsa music at all. She's going to have to just deal with it I've put up with enough from her and she's not going to run the show like she wants to.

AVOIDANCE.....try to avoid them lol and if I have to be with them then i TOTALLY try to avoid ANY and ALL wedding talk completely!! Its my only strategy, I can't grin and bear it, and alcohol has become too fattening lol

FMIL Proved herself again last night to be a handful and put her nose where it don't belong.. in my wedding plans.
She actually called a hall to make an appointment for she & I to go there last night. First off she never asked if I wanted to see the hall, secondnly she never asked if I was available to go.
The only reason she wants me to book this place is because it's in a 5 mile radius of her house and I should take into consideration she's to old to travel... um she's 56? Yeah so ancient.
So push come to shove I called the hall and spoke to the BM she planned on us meeting. I told her what's going on and how I have this agressive, pushy etc FMIL. They understood and I told them I'm not available to come in since she never consulted with me to see if I could make it.
Make a long story short, she went to the appointment alone only to find out upon arriving 'Jennifer got stuck at work, but I can show you around if you like.'
I actually could have made it but I refuse to be barked orders to go here & be there by her. It's my wedding, not hers. And if I had gone that would have made her think I can go anywhere at the drop of a hat anytime she wants.

She came home to her family and shouting how she refuses to be any part of our wedding and won't go. I hope she doesnt.

What gives her the right to call places & make appointments for me without asking if I A) can make it in the first place and B) want to even see the hall.

Luckily the BM understood my situation and I told him I would like to call back and make an appt when I am free to tak a look around with FH.

She's a nightmare!
