I need ideas of where we could go M - F at the end of May for a mini honeymoon.
Here's what I think we are looking for - driving distance from LI (preferably no more than 3 hours) - romantic - a little historic, cultural or something like that - golf - good food - 'reasonable' priced
Any ideas

I'm not sure about the golf, but FH and I went to Montauk every year for labor day and LOVED it.

Where in Montalk does everyone stay, and pardon the ignorance, what do people do out there?
I know there of one golf course, which is great, but what else?
And where should we stay?
ps - Jennbaby - shouldn't you be working???

How about Cape Cod. Full of romance and history. Not sure about golf. That may be a 4-5 hour drive though.

We stayed at Briney Breezes but there are better places. Gurneys I hear is Beautiful (but expensive) . Because we went on a holiday the prices were double everywhere. If you go on a non-holiday you might be able to get a better price at a better place

You can go horse back riding, walk on the trails that lead to the beach, (there are many) visit the lighthouse and walk towards the right on all the rocks. You can sit around there and just watch the ocean. Its beautiful during sunset. I go in the winter when it is like a ghost town. We love it though.

I have stayed at Briney Breezes also. We like it but I wouldn't recommend it for your mini-honeymoon. I would say Gurney's Inn. We are planning on staying at the Hither Cottage b/c it is the only place I have found that is decent that allows pets. They have cottages that have fireplaces, jacuzzis. I don't know if this place is suitable for you or not. I attached the link.
OK since I've never been there, and cw0904 makes it sound so romantic, can someone please recommend a good place to stay?

LOL we don't mean to be romantic we just love it there. I guess that makes it more special. Plus we can bring our dog so that is our vacation with our son for the year. OOPS I meant dog.

Re: short local mini honeymoon
I've posted this before but my suggestion is Newport, RI.
My hubby and I got married four days after 9/11 and had to cancel our European honeymoon.
Instead we took the ferry to Conn and drove to Newport.
It's beautiful and May should be a great time of year. There are many mansions you can visit that were owned by the Vanderbilts and other wealthy New York families as 'summer cottages'. The town is veyr cute, very historic, you can go on a sunset sail -- many boats do these sails. Newport is the yachting capital of the country I think so there are always lots of boats, ships in the harbor. There are vineyards as well.
We stayed at The Inn at Newport which was a few miles from downtown. There are a few great spots to stay right at the harbor. Also lots of great restaurants! YUM! I'll post a few web site links.

Re: short local mini honeymoon
Here is where we stayed: Very cute and across from the beach. It was a last minute reservation so we didnt' get a suite. But I think they do have a suite. They also have a continental breakfast in the morning and a little bar and cafe.
This is the place we tried to stay but it was booked -- but I heard it was really nice. Newport Bay Club and Hotel
This is the vineyard we went to: Newport Vineyards If you have any questions or want more detail just forum mail me. I'm sure wherever you pick you and your new husband will enjoy each other's company.

You should try Cape May, NJ. It is south of Atlantic City and beautiful. It has lovely Victorian bed & breakfasts, it's on the beach and it's low key. I've been there 2xs and loved every minute.Cape May Link

I think going to Montauk is a perfect 'short local mini honeymoon'. Since it will be your honeymoon, you should see about staying at the Montauk Manor. It is a beautiful masion on the hill. I have been to Montauk 3 times and the third time I got engaged there. Since you are going in May, all of the restuarants (especially those closed for the winter) will be opened. If you want more information, send me a forum e-mail.

Newport is very beautiful and romantic. They have a ton of B&Bs that you could stay in. We did a Mansion tour last time we were up there and it was so much fun.
Mystic, CT is also very nice. Its a short drive to Foxwoods too if you like to gamble.
I think Washington DC would be great too, if you don't mind driving a little farther.
Good luck!!!

I vote for Mystic Connecticut! My FH and I LOVED it! It is historical, quaint, and May would be beautiful there. Lots of places to eat on the water. The village is great!
