For those considering getting pregnant, but not pregnant yet here is some important info to consider. When discussing my leave with the HR guy he realized that we have a supplemental insurance to our short term disability policy. I also have long term disablity, but that does not begin until you are out for 90 days so that is really only good if I am put on bed rest or god forbid something really bad happens during labor. Anyway, NY State insurance will pay me 50% of my paycheck up to a whooping $170 per week while I am on my 6-8 weeks of maternity leave. Now the supplemental will pay me 60%of my paycheck in addition to the State money. While on the phone with the insurance gal she informed me that they actually allow people to purchase their own short term disability supplemental insurance policies! I never even knew that. Thankfully I have the coverage but I didn't know for sure until today. But if I had thought this all through I would have inquired about getting this insurance PRIOR to getting pregnant. It is not expensive and will pay you a lot more than the State for those few weeks. Many of you might want to consider looking into this type of coverage to protect your earnings while you are out.

Re: Short Term Disability Supplemental Insurance
Who did you speak to about the supplemental insurance? I am not pregnant yet (not even trying), but this is something that is a concern to me since my firm pays 2 weeks and that's it. The kicker is that the paternity leave is the same as maternity leave. ***!!!!!
Michelle: You can fm the info to me, if you like.

Re: Short Term Disability Supplemental Insurance
Ask your HR dept if you have supplemental short term disability insurance. Then ask who the short term disability carrier is. Just tell the HR guy/gal that you and DH are trying to make sure that you have all your insurance stuff in order since your paychecks are so important. You can call the short term company and ask about additional, private coverage.

How funny, w t f got blocked out of my prior email. Thank you, Michelle. My firm does not offer supplemental insurance, so I need to look into this myself. You are the best, thanks!!!

Re: Short Term Disability Supplemental Insurance
Wow! I guess it depends on where you work. My company has told me that with respect to short term disability if I need it beforehand, I would get up to three months, 100% salary during that time. And then, for maternity leave, I get two months 100%, but can take an additional two months unpaid if I wished (from the Family Leave Act). I'm beginning to feel very fortunate!
