I know it's not about the $$ but a couple came to my wedding and gave us a gift that was well...way below the standard norm. Now it's our turn to go to their wedding. Should I give the same amount (I will feel extremely cheap if I do) or should I bite the bullett and give what I normally would?

Re: Should I be cheap?
I say be the 'bigger' person. I don't know if it's really being bigger though. I hate to admit it, but last year my FH and I went to a wedding and thought we were being generous with the gift we gave to a distant cousin. They probably thought so too, based on the geographic area and the style of wedding. But now, after planning my wedding and seeing how much we spent, I would give much more. Maybe it's the same for this couple. Many people, depending on their background, cannot believe the amount of money we'd pay down her (I'm not from the city) for our weddings. Still, you know, so you should give what you feel is appropriate, regardless of what was given to you.

Re: Should I be cheap?
Rob-luvs-me - I am from Texas, and down there it is unthinkable to give $$ as a wedding gift. In come circles it is considered rude and tacky, so I know what you are talking about. I have even had one of my best friends from Texas ask me what I want for my wedding gift and she asked how it was done up here...I told her and her mouth dropped. She goes 'I love you, but I ain't giving you money. I wouldn't be comfortable doing that.'
Needless to say, FH isn't thrilled about all the Texans coming to my wedding

You have every right to just return what they gave to you. Im sure because of the amount they gave you that they dont expect you to go overboard. Maybe give a little extra than what they gave you. Dont feel bad, obviously they didnt when they gave you your gift????

Thank you, Thrilled!
You are funny!
I am Russian and in our circles money is the only appropriate gift for the wedding. So, I just wanted to know how it works elsewhere and what the standard amount is. It’s about the same as with us! I know a lot of people thing giving money is tasteless, but really it depends on people’s background! Also, I always think: t isn’t it easier to handle money as a gift, which you can spend in ANY store, rather then having to register in a specific place?
