Should I follow Doctor's orders ??

Should I follow Doctor's orders ??

Is it just me that has all the doctors that dont like to 'overmedicate' ??? Everyone from my Primary Care, OB and pediatrician seems to be this way!
I dont know if its a good or bad thing sometimes!

I have a high tolerance for feeling 'sick'. I am NOT a 'lying in bed all day' type of person, no matter how sick I feel.

This past week or so, my mom and sister both got over bronchitis. I didnt think anything of it, being around them, they sounded like they were getting better. Sure enough, slowly but surely, the past 5-6 days, I've been feeling 'ehh'..and last nite and this morning, bad cough, runny nose, stuffy head, sore throat, the works.

Just went to the Dr. and he gave me a prescr for antibitiotics, but said not to start taking them unless i dont get better a week from now ?? He said its just an upper-resp tract infection, and since my runny nose and throat is 'clear' mucus (sorry to be blunt), he said it has to take its course, and theres nothing that can be done. I have taken Nyquil and Dayquil but it just makes me woozy and disoriented and tired, and he said it doesnt speed the healing process, just makes us more 'comfortable' as it releives symptoms temporarily...

Maybe its just the fact that I want a solution to this..and it annoys me when they dont want to drug me right away...

Im really debating taking Dayquil (non-drowsy), or just letting this thing 'run its course'...
Having tea and soup and OJ and MAYBE rest...if I can sit still from doing all my household chores that are staring me in the face, oh and not to mention my precious 5 month old that needs me 24-7 !

Thanks for listening !

Re: Should I follow Doctor's orders ??

Anna, so sorry to hear you're not feeling well!! And having just gotten over a bad case of bronchitis and laryngitis (oh I finally got my voice back the other day), I have to disagree with your dr! I waited over a week before I went to the dr, mostly because I was pg and was nervous about the medication! But I just got progressively worse and by the time I went to the dr, I was in bad shape. I did the whole liquids, tea, soup, gargling, sitting in the bathroom w/the steam, nothing helped because I needed antibiotics!!! And being pg, I couldn't even get a strong one to knock it out of me ASAP, so it took even longer to get better!

So I would tell you to start taking it because you don't want to get worse, you want to nip it in the bud!!! And all those over the counter craps don't work half the time either!!! You know you're own body the best and what will work best for you.

And not for nothing, but why would a dr give you a prescription to hold on to for another week! He anticipates you getting sicker, no? So, go to the drug store ADESSO!!! LOL

Feel better!!!!

I hope you feel better soon!

I understand the doctor especially when it comes to antibiotics. My sister use to take antibiotics everytime whe got sick like if it was candy and now she is immune to them. The doctor now has to always prescribe her something stronger which sometimes doesn't even work.

Thanks girls !

Debbie, you make me laugh but its true in a way. Why give me a prescription ?
Youre dammed if you do and dammed if you dont!

I go to the Dr right away, and he tells me wait till it gets worse. Im sure if I went a week from now and it was worse, I would have gotten 'you waited all this time ??'

I think im going to wait 2 days or so, and drug myself up !

Edited to add: I cant beleive the word 'D A M N E D' gets bleeped out !

Re: Should I follow Doctor's orders ??

Anna, I had the same thing happen to me a few years ago. I had bronchhitis and teh Dr. gave me this lecture about how Americans are overmedicated and that we are building a tolerance to antibiotics becuase they are being prescribed for every little thing. He also gave me a perscription and told me to wait a few days, but I was a week away from my finals and there was no way I was taking my exams while sick, so I went from the doctors office to CVS to fill my prescription.

I hope you are feeling better soon

Re: Should I follow Doctor's orders ??

I used to work in a pediatric office, and prior to working there I was one of those-- give me antibiotics for everything. Then after reading and listening to the docs, I started to understand. Antibiotics are for infections. If the mucus is clear it is not an infection. It is a cold and they will do nothing to clear it up. That is also why there are different types of antibiotics that are used for different infections. You would not use the same antibiotics for strep that you would use for something else. The minute that your mucus changes colors or thickness then you definitely should start the AB's. If not give the virus a week to 9 days to get through your system. Rest up and feel better!!!!!!!

Honestly, it sounds like a virus and antibiotics do not help viruses. If we gave prescriptions to everyone who had viruses eventually our antibiotics will not be as effective because of improper use. I say take some echinacea or zinc, lots of fluids and rest. See your Dr. if it is not getting any better. Feel better.

Thanks girls.
Swags and Drjenn, I was JUST about to go to CVS this morning, because I feel horrible, and Im the type that MUST keep going on with my day. I have things to get done, lol. Ive been coughing and runny nose all nite and I feel feverish, stuffy head and achy muscles.
But I also dont want to take medication if its just going to make me immune to it in the long run if i take it all the time. Dr. did say it was a virus (resp tract inf) and said to only take the meds if it gets worse. So I guess I'll stick to my Dayquil to releive this feeling. Is that just prolonging the healing process? I cant lay down all day, it will drive me nuts. Tons of errands to run and chores to do !

thanks !

Anna-- How are you feeling today?

Re: Should I follow Doctor's orders ??

Feeling a little better, thanks !

I took Dayquil this morning, and havent taken anything since.
Only thing still bothering me is coughing and DRY coughing, so my throat is getting sore !

Debating whether to take Nyquil before bed.
I never did get the prescription !

Re: Should I follow Doctor's orders ??

I am glad that you are feeling somewhat better. The coughing sadly will last the longest. Keep your throat and mouth moist-- ****ing candies, water, ice pops (you know the ones we had as kids with in the plastic wrapper) etc. I hope that you feel even better tomorrow!

editted to add-- If you don't think you will sleep tonight take the Nyquil -- you need to rest!!!
