I agree that it should be but in the boys and girls bathrooms.. I think if it was in the nurses office they wouldnt go ask for it out of embarrassment.

They are going to make their decisions to have sex on their own and I dont think condoms are going to sway them in any way, but I think it would be good to have condoms available in case they decide to.

I am not a prude or anything...and it really wasnt all that long ago that I was a teenager...but I do not think that having condoms in school is a good thing. Maybe because I am a teacher now...or maybe it is the parent in me coming out...

If high schoolers are having sex, which we all know happens, than why cant they go to the store and buy them????

They wont be having sex in school??? (hopefully)
Sooo, they can go to the store and buy what they need , just like they would if they were in school.

In college they dont give out condoms

Yes, I believe they should be available to teens.

For the same reason they won't go to the nurses room and get them there..IT is embarrassing...I have NEVER bought condoms...as an adult i would STILL feel embarrassed to walk up to the counter with them and pay for it...I just embarrassed by tampons! So since it wasn't that long ago you should be able to understand MORE!

AND in the end..i would want MY child protected from PG and diseases...
LIKE YOU SAID....they are doing it...so who cares...let's protect our children

Many are probably embarassed/don't have the money to buy them.

They have condoms availible in the Health Center at my college. Sitting on a table right at the front door.

I agree, if our children are going to have sex anyway in their teens, which most are, then at least they should have protection. Not only protection for them and their partner, but then the rest of their partners they choose to sleep with later on. With the spread of AIDS and other diseases, why shouldnt we? I dont get it.

Its not like kida are going to say, well I dont have a condom so Im not going to have sex.

Or, Ooh I have a condom now let me go have sex.

They have it in their minds already if they are going to or not, so we might as well protect our children that decide to. JMO

ITA. Condoms in schools are not going to sway teenagers either way from having sex. What having them will do is give students ready access to items that will allow them to have safer sex.

NEW

this thread has allowed my FH and I to discuss the topic

he believes with most of the people who have posted...that schools should give out condoms

We came to an agreement that in middle schools they are just too young to be faced with that decision/pressure, their maturity is not there yet and should be taught to abstain...

in high schools (after our discussion) it does seem to be more acceptable...

I see your points...but am still am torn with the idea...

I think they need to be made available....I'm a 7th grade teacher (in Philly) and one of my students is 4 months pregnant and to make matters worse she is a part time special ed student and is basically functioning on a 3rd grade level - I can't help but think if they were made available through the nurse or counselor that maybe it could have been prevented

absolutely. the reasons have already been stated.

To say they should not be handed out is just a clear indication of how fearful people are of what the condom represents. KIDS HAVE SEX! To avoid the problem does not solve the problem.
