should we...

Re: should we...

I think I would get an inexpensive place to live and try to save. I can be very territorial with my space so I know it would be hard for me to do. If FH is open to the idea of living with the FIL's than maybe but I think as a newly married couple it would be better to experience your first year with just the two of you.

Thanks for all of your opinions, ladies. Sorry, I couldnt write back yesterday..we were out.

So, FH has no worries about this. He gets along with my parents, and has no concerns. Overall, my mom and I might bicker at times, but I know it would be fine. I dont see them being in our space too much They wouldn't cross boundaries. If they did, we would leave ASAP.

We can afford rent. We have lived on our own together for a year (and I have been on my own for 3 years). This will just help us literally put 2000+ in savings a month.

The one reason I dont want (it is sooo stupid), is that my grandfather lived there my entire life, and he died there. This is dumb, I know. My sister has lived there since and a tenant. This happened 5 years ago..

I would give us the deadline of a year, and maybe we'd leave sooner, but that and the wedding money will be a NICE down payment.

It depends on the relationship you and your FH has with your parents.

In my family, it wouldn't work, hasn't worked, and lead to disaster...

In other situations, I know people who have done it and it was fine. I would lay out any ground rules between you and your parents right away.. before you accept the living arrangements. Are they setting any limitations or do they have and expectations to you living there???

Also, If you try it and don't like it, can you move out earlier? If you're saving that much, and have a goal of only a year, I'd probably try it.

We all are close and get along well. No limitations/expectations.

If you can seriously save money living at home and your parents won't bother you or interfere, then I say go for it. Get rid of the debt and then you can look for a house.

I would do it if I was sure that my parents wouldnt be interfering. Id set some ground rules. First one being, no pop ins .. They can call as if you werent right upstairs .. You dont want them always barging in since its their house. But if its going to save you guys that much money, its worth it! Good luck :)

Thank you. I really dont see them doing this. I will definitely go over this with them first. They lived upstairs when they first got married while my grandparents lived downstairs. I lived with them up there until I was 3...so I feel they will understand in a way. But definitely things to discuss with them.

i would go into the upstairs apt, you do have your own space and everything, just make sure your parents know the boundaries! thats the last kind of strain you need on a marriage
