move in the upstairs apt at my parents' house to save money??
We want to buy a house. We want to start having babies soon, but we have to fix some debt. Not wedding debt.
One of the best options we can think of is to move at my parents house rent free/or very small for like a year and we can save like 20K!!!!
I'm kind of iffy on it. I just feel like it's moving backwards. I have lived on my own for 3 years now. He doesn't mind. It's an upstairs apt so we'd have space, but ehhhhh
Would you do it?

Re: should we...
it sounds so nice in theory, but living in the upstairs apartment in FMIL's house has destroyed my (and is on the way to destroying FH's) relationship with her.

Re: should we...
if you will only be there for a year then i think it is worth it, otherwise rent and it will just take you a little while longer to save up for a down payment on a house. but ultimately you have to be comfortable w/ your living situation!

This is what I worry about... ughhh
My parents are great. I think they wouldn't cause problems and would give us space, but I don't know.

Re: should we...
only if u truly feel u would save, then yes.
but if u or fh is the type to look at all the extra cash in ur accounts and go drinking or shopping all the time, then i def dont see a point

Re: should we...
We live together now, and we are doing ok with money, but it's hard saving. We can and do save, but we'd be able to save at least $1600 a month this month, most likely a lot more.

Oh, no. We would seriously put 1600-2000 in savings each month.

Re: should we...
Well FH and I are moving into the basement apt. in my parent's house (mostly b/c I've been unemployed and now a student forever now...). But needless to say, I would do it.

Re: should we...
This is something that FH and I are also torn on right now. My parents have an apartment on the side of the house and they offered to give it to us for free as well. I mean it's tempting but FH and I have never lived together and we've been looking so forward to moving out together and being about to decorate and have our own private place. But at the sametime it's like we would be saving $1600 a month.....anyway, we really spoke about it in depth the other night and decided to get our own place. I feel like especially in the beginning it's important for us to have our independence.

Re: should we...
No question. You should absolutely do it. Don't think of it as taking a step back. Think of it as giving you and FH a great jumpstart and a solid base to begin your life together. You'd be giving yourselves such an advantage.
Pick a date where you'll start the moving-out process and stick to it.

Re: should we...
i guess it would depend on the relationship u have with ur mom.....mine's italian, and has no idea what boundries are, and we are constantly fighting as FH and I live in the apt i made when i dormered up my parent's house........
i can't wait to get the eff out.

Re: should we...
i know of relationships that have ended bc people moved in with parents - even in separate apartments. you two deserve a place you can call your own..even if you rent it

Re: should we...
only you can tell us if you think you and FH can stand living with the parentals.
even if the apartment is ABOVE... you will still be in eachothers way sometimes.
i know that i couldn't do it. absolutely.
it wouldn't be worth it to us to do it unless we were in dire straights.
but if you think you guys can handle it i say DEFINITELY. charge yourselves 'rent'.
no ifs, ands or buts.... you HAVE to pay 'the rent' and put that $1600-2000 in your 'house account'

Re: should we...
It depends on the relationship you and your FH has with your parents.
In my family, it wouldn't work, hasn't worked, and lead to disaster...
In other situations, I know people who have done it and it was fine. I would lay out any ground rules between you and your parents right away.. before you accept the living arrangements. Are they setting any limitations or do they have and expectations to you living there???
Also, If you try it and don't like it, can you move out earlier? If you're saving that much, and have a goal of only a year, I'd probably try it.
