I'm not sure wheter or not we are having an engagement party. I am trying to figure out if it worth it. Are you having one? Who usually pays for it? Is it really necessary? How long do you have to have an engagement party?

Re: Should you have an Engagement Party
My parents want to throw us an eparty. It's going to be at their house in the backyard. But their backyard is country club like so it's going to be catered and really elegant. But we're having a long engagement so it's a way to celebrate before the wedding.

This is what we are doing and our thoughts exactly!

didn't have one I feel like you already ask people for enough during a wedding

Re: Should you have an Engagement Party
I like the bbq idea especially since both of our birthdays are in the beginning of July. It could be a birthday/e-party. I don't think it would be to costly. I am still on the fence as to whether it is excessive.

having one once the weather gets warmer..perhaps in may or june. thought a backyard party/barbeque would be fun..just immediate family and bridal party.

Re: Should you have an Engagement Party
We had one because we wanted both of our families to have a chance to meet each other. We didn't want something super formal, so we reserved a park space on Roosevelt Island and had it catered by a BBQ place (Fireside Caterers- all you eat BBQ food). We got 2 kegs, had games for the kids, and did a whole yankee theme. It was one of the best times I've ever had. here are some pics

Re: Should you have an Engagement Party
we had one... but we limited it to only immediate family (which was still about 60 ppl, i have a huge family lol) and we just had it at a room in a restaurant... i didnt want it to be a mini-wedding and it was perfect... I think it was worth it because we opened up our first joint bank account with the money we got

We didnt have one.....I actually hate them and think of them as an added expense for your family and guests. People do enough for your wedding they should not be expected to get another gift.

Re: Should you have an Engagement Party
it is not necessary but i did have one. i saw it as an opportunity for our entire families to meet. my mom paid for it and we only invited close family... that alone was about 55-60 people! We had it at domenico's in levittown, a lunch on a saturday. it was very nice! You can have it whenever you want....I had it a while after getting engaged since i have such a long engagement. (engaged April 2008, e-party March 2009, wedding June 2010) I will say that having an engagement party was nice due to the fact that our family mostly gave money which we put into our wedding fund... it definitely did help with vendor payments and payments we have to make down the line. if you want one then go for it!

Re: Should you have an Engagement Party
We had one-it was very low key-more of a 'we're getting married-we're throwing a BBQ to celebrate' LOL! It was in FH father's backyard. We did evites and had favors but the favors were really the only 'wedding aspect' of the party. We had typical BBQ food; a DJ; some balloons and ate, drank & danced until 11pm. It was a lot of fun! We didn't register or anything but we did get gifts-some gift cards; glasses; frames; cash. The $$ is going straight towards the wedding...

Re: Should you have an Engagement Party
We are having one - it wasn't something I really wanted but FH's family was all about it so they are taking it on.
They priced out a BUNCH of places but we got a better deal at Westbury Manor - 1/2 hour cocktail, sit down dinner, we got a DJ, open bar and we are having favors. We have about 100 people coming - so yea, it's a mini wedding!! Not what I wanted to go for originally but I am excited about it.
It's def not needed to have one - it's what you feel comfortable with. I didn't want to do the backyard thing b/c i didn't want to have FH's family feel like they had to 'work' they party, even if they did hire a catering company to do it. We have A LOT of OOT family and friends so this is going to be the first time we see any of them since we got engaged.
We got engaged in September 20o9 - our e-party is March 2010 and the wedding is May 2011.

Re: Should you have an Engagement Party
That's completely up to you! While I guess some people do it to get money, I think it's really just to get the families together, get to know each other and celebrate the engagement. If you read etiquette books, gifts are actually completely optional at engagement parties.
I didn't want one because I didn't want people to feel obligated to give us more gifts (on top the shower and wedding as it is) but they're always done in FH's family so he really wanted it. I'm glad it was kept relatively simple though. It was thrown by FMIL in her backyard (it's pretty big), she rented tents, hired waitresses and had most of the food catered but family did some of the cooking. Everyone had a good time and it went really well.

Re: Should you have an Engagement Party
We had one, at first we debated on it because we were gonna have to pay for it. but then we decided to have one, it ended up costing a lot more then we expected, but it was worth it. we had a great time and the extended families had a chance to meet.
