wow, that's the most cynical and ridiculous view of writing thank-yous that i've ever heard. i would really HOPE that anyone i wrote a sincere thank-you to for traveling and taking time to spend a special day with me, wouldn't be thinking i have some ulterior motive and i'm using it to guilt them into giving me a gift- ***?!? that is ridiculous. i wrote a thank-you to everyone who came to my engagement party whether they gave a gift or not, because i appreciated their presence and the efforts they took to be with me on that day. anyone who doubts the motives of someone who takes the time to write a nice THANK YOU has a serious paranoia problem.

Re: Should you send a Thank You...
Question-do you really have to send a thank you card to everyone that shows up? If they give a gift or not?
I went to a DW right after FH & I bought our house and we weren't able to give them a gift. Our friend understood $$ was tight and was just happy for us to be able to make the trip down to the caribbean with them. We had ANOTHER DW later that SAME month and again; we paid for our hotel; car; all that extra stuff but our friend told us not to give them a gift since they knew we had just gone to another DW AND had bought the house. Again; no thank you card in the mail from them.
They were extremely grateful to all the guests that had traveled and went out of their way to express it while we were at both DW. But we never received thank you cards for just going?
My local weddings i've given gifts; and recevied TY cards.

Re: Should you send a Thank You...
i def disagree. i think u should thank every person b/c it isnt about gifts its about them sharing the day w. u, u know? miss manners is crazy to think that that will illicit question marks in these ppls minds about your motives - i think the opp; we sent thank u's to everyone from our e-party even no-gifters lol and they all mentioned how lovely it was to recieve a little token of appreciation.

I say just send it. It shouldn't be that much of a difference in numbers between gift givers and non gift givers anyway to make a difference. It's polite to send a thank you to everyone...it's not like we're really wasting ink or taking that much extra time out of our day to write it.

Wow, I always thought you thanked everyone regardless of giving you a gift. I couldn't find anything on Martha Stewart Weddings, they usually have a lot of etiquette stuff on there.

I've also heard that giving people a favor is a important to thank them for coming...
