I am a bridesmaid in my friend's wedding this august, and her shower is coming soon. I am trying to think of a unique gift, either to give instead of a registry item or with a registry item. She is one of my very best friends, so I'd like to give something a little more personal. What are everyone's thoughts on this? And has anyone received a gift that they felt was especially fun or cool or touching?

Re: Shower Gifts
I got a great pizza making kit from a relative, including a homemade CD with a mix of music labeled 'Music to Eat Pizza By'. It wasn't a store-madel kit, they just bought everything I would need including the baking sheet, slicer, cheese grater, garlic press, and the CD was a great personal touch.
Whats on her registry? For example, if there is a blender, you could get that and then make up a booklet with how to make milkshakes, smoothies, and mixed drinks along with quotes and photos. Then make up a CD with tropical music.

Re: Shower Gifts
One of my good friends gave me a spa certificate for a facial and massage (figuring I'd need the stress reliever in the last weeks before the wedding) and a nice fluffy robe. It was really nice, and different than any other shower gift - the only 'just for me' gift I received at the shower.

A cool idea is to purchase a gift certifcate for something they can use on the honeymoon like dinner at a restaurant or a snorkel/scuba excursion. You could even give scuba lessons before their honeymoon. We are going to Maui and there is a ton of stuff to do there. I would love a gift certificate for a submarine excursion or something like that!

Re: Shower Gifts
I once saw someone give the bride stuff for the honeymoon-- like a photo album, beach bag etc...it was really cute and different.
something to get you 'dirty' and something to keep you clean (a friend of mine got me chocolate love sauce (lol) and nice soaps)
4 bottles of wine: labeled: your first night, your first fight, your first holiday and your first anniversary
bakeware with a great recipe and all the supplies (ie flour, sugar, etc)
wine glasses with wine charms or bottles of fine wine

Re: Shower Gifts
I like 'themed' gifts in general that you put together yourself. Take a look at her registry and see if you can pull something like that together by building on her registry gift.
I just gave someone a bar kit - all her bar stuff of the registry, added a bottle of booze and a jazzy cocktail making book.

Re: Shower Gifts
If you're crafty you can do what my friend just did for someone...the bride is having a beach theme in June, so my friend made her a beautiful treasure chest with the bride and grooms names, seashells, and other decorative beach things for her card box at the wedding...it will go right on their table, and it looks incredible! Guests can either drop the cards in themselves, or hand them to the bride and groom and they can do it. It really meant soooo much to the bride! Maybe you could make something like that, or a mailbox that is personalized...

Re: Shower Gifts
I just had my shower this weekend, and my sister did a neat thing. She did Around the world in 7 gifts. She started by giving me a recipe and then I opened a box with the matching flag for the country that the gift came from, and in the box was everything I would need to make the recipe. For example, Italy was pizza and she gave me a pizza stone and cutter and pizza keepers, pizza oven mits, an italian apron, spices, etc. It was a great idea. It leaves a lot of room for creativity, but can get a little expensive. Other countries I had were Greece, Switzerland, Germany, Mexico, USA, and France.

I like the shower towel cakes if you want to see one check ebay. My girls all went in and paid for my shower as well as a digital camcorder for me.

Re: Shower Gifts
If you want to spend a pretty penny get her a hope chest. New Lane makes so truly beautiful ones, but they are not inexpensive at all. It will last 3 lifetimes though. I keep my fingers crossed that I get one. A good friend of mine was in a wedding and all the girls chipped in. THe bride was thrilled. It is unique and something that she can pass down to her daughters.

Re: Shower Gifts
I just thought of another idea I have seen done 2 ways...
1. The MOH bought the bride something symbolic for every holiday of the year
or
2. Each member of the bridal party picked a holiday month of the year and made a gift basket relating to that holiday.
I just remembered that, and thought it was such a great idea!

My sister bought me a Lladro for my engagement. I think they are so beautiful and you can find many 'friendship' related ones as well. I also bought one for my friend who had a baby and she loved it. I really like the hope chest idea posted earlier. Very clever. Otherwise, check to see what she has on her registry....at least you know it will be something she wants/needs. good luck!

Re: Shower Gifts
My shower was this past weekend. My FH's cousin made a beautiful gift for me to use on our wedding day. It's a large white basket decorated with silk flowers in my colors and tulle. Inside was small bottles of bubbles wrapped in tulle and pink ribbon. She called called my sister to find out how many guests we are having and what my colors are. I'm so excited because I was debating whether to have just rose petals or bubbles or both, and now I can have both!!

Re: Shower Gifts
Thanks to everyone for their replies - it almost gave me too many ideas!
I am going to split the gift with another bridesmaid and here is what we are planning: His and Hers Tiffany keyrings and a bag of things for the honeymoon: beach tote, beach towels, snorkels and masks, sunscreen, etc.
All together it is a little on the pricey side, but her mom is throwing the shower, so we can swing a more expensive gift. Plus, you only get married once, right ?

Re: Shower Gifts
I have also given a good friend of mine a decoration for each holiday of the year, wrapped in a paper that reflects the holidays and given in order. I made her a personalized ceramic pumpkin with their last name cut out in the mouth. That gift is always a hit.

Re: Shower Gifts
I was at ashower where someone made bags up for each month. Jan- Dec. In each were placemats and cookiecutters and decorations for the month. It was really cute but I think it took over a year to collect all the stuff.
