I am getting married in Atlanta (and live in Atlanta), but my family lives on Long Island. My sister wants to have a shower for me there, but we can't figure out what to do about the gift situation. How would I get gifts to Atlanta? Thanks for you help!

Re: shower question
Ooh, that's a tough (aka expensive) one.
My FH said it would be just as costly to bring the gifts on the plane with you as it would be to ship/mail them down to Atlanta, so you would be better shipping them home.
Can your sister suggest having the gift mailed directly to your home and have the guests print out a picture and wrap it up or put it in a card?

Re: shower question
That's a good idea. I was actually thinking about that-having them ship the gifts right to me and putting a picture in a box. Thanks!

Re: shower question
This may be silly, but if you have guests driving to the wedding maybe they could hold the gifts and pack up the gifts and drive them down when they come to the wedding or instead of flying to the shower you could drive to LI (if you have the time), but now that i wrote that it seems sillier.

Re: shower question
BB&B, Fortunoff's ,Target...and many others offer free shipping and free gift wrapping. Perhaps they can shop on line and have the gifts arrive a day or two early. They could give you a card at the actual shower, and when you get home, you can have the excitement of opening all of those gifts.

Re: shower question
If you want to open up the actual gifts...why don't you look into hiring a moving van or renting one yourself to drive back to atlanta.

I am all for ordering the gifts in advance and shipping them to you.

Re: shower question
I've heard lots of people ship directly - that would be the easiest - you get to open two sets of gifts!

Re: shower question
I just had the same situation. My shower was in NY in late March and I live in California. I had 30 people at my shower. Some gifts were mailed to me such as pilsners, martini glasses, everyday glasses. However most of my gifts were given to me at the shower...like my bedding, vase, corningware, dishes, etc. I returned the corningware as it was too heavy and rebought it in CA. I brought ALL of the other gifts back with me in luggage. My mom had bought me luggage for xmas and kept it in NY for the shower gifts. I checked 3 suitcases, two of which were very large. I took most of the gifts out of the boxes, expresso maker, fondue set...you get the point and I was able to wrap them in tissue paper and it all fit. I carried on two pieces and checked 3 bags. My suitcases were the most 50 lbs. The limit is 70, so I think you'll be able to do it. I hope that helps.

Re: shower question
when my friend got married her family was upstate. she had a regular shower on Long island(where they live now) and a money shower upstate(there was a special name for it) but basically, everyone just gives money in a card.
