First off, believe me I am an animal lover (a dog groomer by profession) and I would be absolutely ethical in thier treatment and care. But I am having a beach themed wedding and wanted to incorporate that into the cp's. So, I thought fish cp's would be very pretty. I went to Michaels crafts and saw these glass containers (for lack of a better word). They round, circular in shape but had low sides, container was not spherical only about 4 or 5 inches tall, but wide diameter. Wish I could pull up a pic, it's hard to explain. So have the container on teh table with those pretty pearlized rocks/ marbles in them, or aquarium sand, the fish swimming a round and a lilly floating on top.

Re: Siamese Fighting Fish centerpeices.
My take on it:
I know it's controversial...it's terrible to just USE an animal as a decoration...but I think with the proper conditions, the idea could be done...and I'm an 'adoption of animals off-the-street' animal lover: I've had too many.
A word about betta: You need to keep them alone, they look pretty when they are scared/fighting & can survive in small places in water with a low oxygen content. They are held at the pet-store & sold in small containers (at least at PETCO) that are similar to what you get when you order a 1/4 lb of potato salad. I'm sure prize betta fish (really beautiful, bred ones) are held in better conditions. To keep betta healthy, a filtration system is recommended.
The way that you have it sound (containers already decorated with beta fish inside) sounds like it may not be all so bad for the fish...it certainly is better than the potato salad containers...and is probably the way lots of kids get their 1st pet. I'm sure if you have pets & have done some research on bettas: it would break your heart to see them maltreated.
Talk with your guests and friends: if you think you have enough RESPONSIBLE people to adopt one, it may help you make a decision. If you have 10 tables....maybe you could do a fish on every OTHER table...get flowers or candles for every other one, get BIGGER Containers: they DO jump....and imagine THAT. You can adopt 1, your families: 2 for parents, a couple for siblings& cousins: you may be able to just do all the adopting yourself...and assure that no fish were harmed.
As for the eating watching fish: people hold weddings at aquariums. I've been to lots of restaurants in aquariums (Epcot, etc). I don't think it'll bother that many people (I can be wrong). The restaurants & weddings were packed. I never heard anyone complain.
As for the eating fish: that's pretty gross: you KNOW your company.
Just prepare yourself for lots of work & make someone responsible to remove bowls if some fish die.
I thought about this for a minute: and THEN decided to get flowers. Just easier. Plus the animal lovers I know all have cats that would get at the fish.

maxie love: maybe you can do this CP with the sand and all but without the fish in it
I agree. Maybe with shells in the sand. The centerpiece would look beautiful but I think at the end of the night you will be left with a lot of fish that don't get taken home.

Even if people take them home how do you know they will be responsible with them or truly prepared to care for them? People may think it seems like a good idea to take a fish home at the time but that doesn't mean they will be good fish owners long-term. Fish can't communicate with you to let you know it's too warm or they're stressed, etc. They're not a decoration..they're animals and it seems like a bad idea. I feel like you've already decided that this is what you want to do..you asked for opinions but are offended by them.
Would you put puppies in a cage as your CPs and then give them out at the end of the night? why not? it seems like a ludicrous example but I really don't see a big difference

IMHO i would be very upset at a wedding that had that...i would hate that live animals were the decoration. i would be more focused on that than the wedding itself
It's definitely not a good idea. People will drink and god knows what will happen to these poor little guys. Please don't do it. There are so many other great CP ideas out there that don't use animals.

i truly cant believe people feel so strongly about fish lol...ok well i am an animal lover too, but the OP is a dog groomer, she obviously has thought about what will happen to the fish and how to take care of them etc...plus if youre only putting one fish per table in a larger sized vase, youre talking only really 20 or so fishies, depending on how many are at her wedding..i coulda found 20 responsible 'fish wanters' at my wedding, and trust me, there were alot of drunks, but cmon were not 5th graders at a feast. anyway, those advising against it, saying its torturous and cruel...i hope youre all vegetarians, and im sure none of you have leather sneakers or coach bags anyway, i did think of doing this, but decided i wouldnt want to be responsible for them that day or at the end of the nite..your choice..they do look cute ;)
