How long did you go for? How many days do you think you need to 'see' Sicily? What are the 'must see' places?
Thanks!

Re: Sicily
It's really beautiful in the summertime. If your only going to Sicily and not otehr parts of Italy I would say 1 week so you can also relax and go to the beach . All the major cities are usually 2-3 hours drive apart. Palermo is the capital city (big and lots to see). Agrigento, Selinute and Taormina have Greek temples and ruins. There's Mt. Etna in the middle of the island and has an active volcano that you can climb. It last was active in the 1990's I think. The northern coast of the island has beautiful beaches. One beach we went to (and I was realy young when we went so I may not be remembering this right) was San Vito lo Capo. You'd swear you were in the carribbean. It might be in the NW part of the island near a city called Trapani. Have fun!

Re: Sicily
Thank you so much!
We're looking into the Amalfi Coast for our HM...with stops in Rome (day or two) and Tuscany/Florence (3 days tops) with the rest in the Amalfi Coast (Positano, Ravello) and a day in Capri. My Poppie was from Sicily so I thought I'd visit - didn't know if it was a day trip or longer. Looks like we'd need more time...
Do you know how long the boat ride is to Sicily (I'm assuming, from Amalfi or Naples)?
Thanks again!

Re: Sicily
I have never been to Sicily (even though DH's other side of family still lives there in Siracusa), but we have been dying to.
Just wanted to let you know it's a pretty far distance to go from the areas you will be in and probably best to focus on Amalfi, Rome and Tuscany for longer than rush all of them.
DH and I thought to go on our honeymoon and it turned out we are just going to make a seperate trip out of it....b/c it involved so much travel time....
Just wanted to throw that out there....
Good Luck!!

Re: Sicily
Thanks Sage...that's what I thought - that it would be too far. As it is, I'd prefer skipping Florence (b/c I'd rather relax than sitesee the whole trip) but FH really wants to go. We figured we'd fly into Rome and stay there for 2 days TOPS then take a train to Florence for 3 days or so...then a car to the Amalfi Coast.
If you have better suggestions...PLEASE pass them along!

Re: Sicily
We were in Italia for 2 weeks for our honeymoon. In my opinion we wanted to enjoy the places and not be travelling so much. Sicily is incrediable the people are lovely. We spent 3 days visiting family in Sicily from there took messina-salerno train, car service to positano 4 nights in Positano then 2 nights in Capri then to Ravello followed by one day and night in Rome FM me with questions I did a ton of research

Re: Sicily
This is STRICTLY my opinion, but - if I were you I would skip Rome for a relaxing honeymoon.... It's like being in NY, only more overwhelming!!! Don't get me wrong, I LOVE IT, but it's hectic and somewhat stressful. But if you guys both really want to see it - go.
Re: the train to Florence....It's a gorgeous ride and only about 2 hours, but don't make the same mistake we did: MAKE SURE YOU ASK FOR THE NON-SMOKING CAR. We didn't realize we had to and ended up inhaling enough smoke to kill a small country! lol!
As for Florence, I am biased b/c I got engaged and married there...lol! It's my favorite city IN THE WORLD! There is so much to see and do and you can literally walk everywhere....
Go to dinner at Il Latini, Buca Lapi ($$, but famous and SO GOOD) and Buca Mario....yum yum! Go to the Boboli Gardens and walk around....so beautiful. Sit in the Piazza De La Reppublica and people watch....(and get some gelato at Gilli). For a day excursion, rent a car and drive to San Gimignano....omg....so incredible!!!
I could go on and on and on.....
Let me know if you have any other questions....I am more than happy to help!

Re: Sicily
I am with Sage we flew out of Rome and spent one day and night and returning from two weeks in Southern italy it was complete culture shock, although if your Catholic the Vatican is a special place to visit on your hm....It is like new york and the food is not good. Well it's not like Southern Italy anyway

Re: Sicily
If you're staying in Amalfi then it probably would be too far. I'm guessing the boat is at least 9 hours. Rome is a 12 hours drive to Siciliy. You'll love amalfi though. So beautiful. Rome is just a couple of hours north so it wouldn't be too bad of a day trip (although there is a lot to see in a day)
I agree with the others...a quick stop to the Vatican wouldn't be a bad idea.

Re: Sicily
I know this will sound odd for a honeymoon, but you may want to consider a tour, like Perillo. I went on their Southern tour which included Sicily & there were 2 couples who were on their honeymoons. You certainly don't have the freedom you'd have on your own, but you also don't have to worry about transportation, carrying your luggage etc. You could also consider joining a tour after your honeymoon. If you want to go on your own, you could fly from Naples to Palermo in about an hour. To see the whole island will take some time, but it's worth it.

We've considered Rome for 2 reasons (trust me, if it were *all* up to me, I'd just visit the Amalfi Coast)...we fly into Rome so why not visit some of the ruins and FH's grandfather is from Rome (so that last one is more of a personal reson).
I wouldn't spend more than 2 days/1 night there (day of arrival and then next full day). I'm more interested in Positano, Ravello and Tuscany.

Re: Sicily
Well...If you're flying there, then I have to agree...since you are already there, why not stay and see everything. It really is an AMAZING city....just overwhelming. It's also good that the hectic part (Rome) is at the beginning of the HM and not the end.... And especially knowing hat your FH's Grandfather was from there makes it even more important!
I am so excited for you! I love Italy so much...(can you tell? lol) I can't wait to see your pic's when you get back!
