Re: Signing on from Michigan
Well I will have to let you know. The movers came and picked up my stuff on Monday. (They guarenteed my father it would NOT be put in storage and would be delivered by no later than 8 days - well they sent a storage company NOT a moving company to get my stuff - THEY DRAGGED ALL OF THE BOXES INCLUDING THOSE MARKED FRAGILE AND DROPPED MY TV - now they tell me the people who were supposed to go backed out so I might have to wait until the 3rd for my stuff - hopefully NOT longer!
We got a rental SUV - to drive out my cats (large cages) and some of my stuff. - We are shipping my car out there (FH is going to take my old car and sell his since mine is in better condition) they were supposed to pick up my car yesterday and ship it here by sat. Well there was some problem mom tells me so they won't get the car until maybe friday!
But as far as the drive goes - it was very smooth - the cats cried for about 30 mins then settled down and slept the whole two days! They drive actually went very well - no real traffic and only about 2 hours total of rain.
Fh didn't check out the apt well b.c I found somethings that need to be fixed. Otherwise it is MUCH larger than my place in NY and with some real furniture and lights (only one ceiling light in the apt - other than bathrooms) it will be really nice!
I pick up my new car on sat - dad surprised me on Monday night by telling me he BOUGHT me the car rather than leasing it which was the original plan!! I can't believe him - he has been so supportive and helpful these past few weeks.

Re: Signing on from Michigan
congrats on the move...and I hope everything works out with the movers...did you go with a major company? then everything should be covered under insurance...as someone who has moved long distance...i can totally sympathize with the stress and driving with a cat...I drove with no cage...no room...
I hope everything works out how you want

Re: Signing on from Michigan
yes I went with United. They underestimated my stuff by almost 1000 lbs. - they did not send a moving truck as promised (although someone else was moving with the same company SAME time and they got professional movers) - they sent me a storage company who could barely lift anything - my father had taken the day off from work and was there on the phone with the company all morning. There are mulitple issues with them. So we shall see. I just want my stuff in one piece - yes I did get insurance - but it only covers for book value not what you actually paid for it - (some of my things are older - like my tv etc - and I could not afford to replace if they do not come in one piece
My father had insurance when they moved and the company they used broke, chiped or badly damaged ALL their furniture and they refused to fix most of it - lied to the BBB etc. My dad had to take pics to court it was a mess. so we shall see.

Sorry to hear about the moving fiasco
At least you were okay with the cats.
Welcome to the Midwest! (okay well I am more 'Midwest' than you are!)

Re: Signing on from Michigan
I like it so far - altough honestly I haven't been out much - FH had class this morning and I don't know my way around yet to really go out exploring. We have some things that need to be fixed with the new apt (leaks, new tub, no hot water! etc) so we had people in and out of the apt all day so I really didn't get out much.Actually I met a girl on the wedding channel who just moved here (to my apt complex it turns out) from DC - she emailed me today to invite me over tonight - but I have some unpacking to do and am very tired so I didn't take her up on the offer - but turns out I have an open invitation - so at least I will have one nice person to talk to it seems!
Other than that - everything seems really good - I really don't feel like I have moved yet (without the furniture it doesn't feel real yet - more like I'm visiting!)

Re: Signing on from Michigan
Christine, Where in MI are you? I lived out there for a year....yet it was a super rough winter & they were kinda backwards w/ the plowing & such (no side streets, schools closed for days, etc.). Yet the cost of living (apts anyway) was so much more reasonable. Ann Arbor is beautiful...I loved going to U of M games. I worked for WJBK in Soutfield (is Cam Carmen still on the air?) and lived actually on the outskirts of Detroit/Dearborn Hgts.Don't even get me started w/ the fiasco of my move....chaos....
At least its done....that's great news about the car.

Re: Signing on from Michigan
I am in Lansing. I have no idea who is on the radio yet...lol I can't even find my way out of the apt complex (other than to some stores down the block).

Congratulations. It sounds like things are going smooth for the move (Except for the movers). It sounds like you have a beautiful apartment.
