SIL called OFF wedding..NOW WHAT?

Hi, my SIL called off her wedding. She isnt sure what to do now. The wedding was supposed to be at Sandcastle Jan 11, 2008. She has Patken, Tommy Tunes and the limos booked. Deposits and alot of additional payments have been made. She said the hall and photographer have 1 payment left. Her $5000 gown just came into Kleinfelds too. Does anyone know how to handle this?
Thanks

I don't think there is anything she can do, especially if she signed contracts with the vendors, she guaranteed them work.. That they are now out of. Also most halls will give you back your deposits if its MORE then a year away, but its only 5 months so she's not going to be able to get any back.

she should def try to sell the package on ebay or craigslist.... as a package deal it may sell..

Maybe the vendors and RH will be OK with holding it for a later date. When he /she is ready to get married.

Oh my.. I think she needs to call the Fh as soon as possible. There should be a cancellation policy on the contract she signed. Hopefully she can get some of the money back. The dress I am sure whe can sell on ebay or craigslist.

She could try to get someone to book her date for the RH.

Unfortunately I don' t think there is much she can do. The vendors might be willing to use her payments as a credit for her next wedding. I doubt they will give her money back. Sorry for the news.

Thanks everyone! I figured she would lose the money. I will tell her about ebay and craigslist. Maybe someone out there wants to get married at the sandcastle on Jan 11!

She should be able to get back the 'additional' payments - but the deposits, IDK.. She might be able to talk to the vendors and see what they say - they do have 5-6 months to get another client. Tell her to read her contracts to see if there is some sort of time frame that she has to get money back.

As for her dress, E-bay it... she should definitely get some bites...

She needs to read EVERY single contract - she's bound by what she agreed to.

Some vendors MAY negotiate beyond that, but I wouldn't expect them to -- especially not with less than 6 months until the event.

Sorry for your SIL.

She's only getting back the additional payments if that's what is in the contract. Most halls specify that all payments made to date will be kept by the hall. This is why she needs to read her contracts carefully before contacting vendors.

There is a law for Suffolk County, but I believe it is either 6 mos. or 1 year... plus Sand Castle is in Nassau... Stinky situation!!!

def. call the vendors and tell them first and see what they can do. look into the suffolk county law.

Re: SIL called OFF wedding..NOW WHAT?

My friend called off her wedding and went through all this insanity. She ended up paying the rest for her dress and keeping it after some emotional turmoil. BM dresses she sold on ebay and as for the vendor payments, she didnt get her deposit but she did get some of the subsequent payments but not all.

I'd suggest trying to find someone who is trying to plan a last minute wedding and give them the date/photog etc. While she might not recoup the full amount, she might be able to get a fair bit back. I'd post this on similar wedding boards in the tri-state area and craigslist.

good luck
