Silk flowers ??

I just wanted to know everyones opinions on using fake silk flowers instead of real flowers in the centerpieces? Is it a lot cheaper? My fmil wants to make our centerpieces and said she would have to use silk flowers, and I don't know how I feel about this. If anyone has used them and has pictures I would love to see! Thank you!

there are a lot of silk flowres now that do look very real but they can get expensive real quick.... maybe take a ride to a craft store and see if there are any flowers there you like and there are people that will arrange then there

The range of quality is huge. I'm doing my own everything....I went to the flower district in NYC for some, on-line, & a wholesale store in Deer Park (I have a Tax ID #). I do look at the local craft stores, but the flowers I want - color & quality - they don't have. As far as saving $$? Yes & No. I could agrue BOTH sides for several reasons....too many to list. The question is, what do YOU want? My situation is a little different, I have complete control over what everything will look like in the end....& I don't have to be 'polite' & say they are 'nice', because you don't want to hurt their feelings or feel ungreatful. TRUST ME, a few people offered their help with my DIY projects....but I'm too particular & anal....I'd rather Do it myself!
Hope that helps.

My friend was in a wedding where they used silk flowers, and she said no one could tell that the flowers were silk, and the bride and groom definitely saved a lot of money by using these instead of real flowers.

To me, flowers are not a huge deal, and it's the area where I wanted to spend the least amount of money. So if you're looking to save money, then go with the silk flowers.

Also, I'd say definitely go and check out the silk flowers at a store so you get an idea of how it looks and if you'll like it, before anyone starts making anything.

I actually thought it was so tacky, but I ran into a flower that could not be alive during my wedding time, so I considered it.

The cheapest silk flowers cost as much as the real ones, wholesale anyway.

The better quality silk flowers look really decent, but cost a lot more than real.

The only upside is that you can re-use them weeks, months, years after wedding. I was thinking as gift wrap adornments.

This is just my experience looking for silk poppies. Maybe its different for other flowers.

Here's the thing though, If you get the silk flowers are you going to be worried that one of your guests notices? I would be so nervous that anyone know they were silk, it would ruin my day.

I am worried that people will see that they are fake and think we cheaped out. I never even thought of using the fake flowers but my fmil says they are cheaper. I've seen pictures of her work and she does a nice job, its just not what I want for my wedding. When I tell people we might use silk they make faces. My next question is how do I tell my fiance and fmil that I would really prefer the real flowers without hurting her feelings because I know its something she wants to do? Or am I just being a selfish bridezilla saying that I want real flowers? Or can anyone think of a compromise that would be a centerpiece without flowers?? Any suggestions are welcome!!

I would not use silk flowers. If money was an issue I would get an affordable low floral CP.

Ostrich feathers & eiffel towers, candles & petals, vases of different sizes filled with water & 1 stem (ei. orchids)...sometimes colored water or the submersible floral lights. I'm making my own crystal wedding trees w/silk orchids which I will be marketing (in a few months)...but you can always say you simply LOVE the smell of FRESH flowers....no matter what, go with your gut.

She told me we could spray the flowers so that they 'smell real' we are doing a butterfly release at the ceremony so i was able to get my bouquets real in hope that butterflys will be attracted to them for some pictures...

i also want something low and very simple for the centerpiece, so the cost shouldnt be bad. i know fmil and fiance like the tall ones, but im my opinion they seem to block conversations at the tables (costco actually has so nice centerpieces and bouquets on there web site that don't seem expensive)

I have two years to go till the wedding so i dont know if its worth it to bring it up now or should i wait till it gets closer?

I would love to see pictures of the crystal wedding trees you are doing!

Most of the silk flower arrangements I have seen on this site look very fake. I think that if you're doing this and want them to look right, you will probably have to spend a lot.

However, no matter how real they are, don't expect your guests not to notice. I know that I usually smell, closely examine, and taste (okay, I don't actually taste) the flowers because I love them.

IMHO.......if you can afford real do real. I don't like fake flowers in general, but on the rare occassion I do like them they are more expensive then real flowers. There are tons of cp options so maybe take to the florist and explain what you want

I'm using silk flowers and they really are not cheaper than real. The upside of silk is that you can do them ahead of time. I had this horrible dream that the florist never showed up for the wedding and then less than a week later I was watching Bridezilla and the episode was about a bride whose florist never showed up. After that I would not be able to relax the night before wondering. My mom did all the floral decorations for the church and RH but we are not having floral centerpieces.

The silk flowers I am using are the same price as the real ones actually. My case is just a bad alllergy and not wanting a swolen face for my wedding lol

I think they could look great, but if its not what you want then don't do it!

Re: Silk flowers ??

thank you for all your opinions girls!!

I was looking more into this and thinking of doing some sort of candelabra but i dont know if thats too wintery for a summer wedding???

Or a bunch of single vases with a single flower (roses or gerber daisies) in each on the table??

I dont want anything too tall tho, I feel like it seperates the tables too much because you cant see passed it if its too big. so i wanted something low and simple...any other suggestions???

for the place in Deer Park, tax id # only? Public can't go in?

I've seen some absolutely beautiful silk flowers and had even used them for a project for someone elses wedding (bird cage).

I agree with the others where you need to go and take a look....Michael's has a pretty big selection (or AC Moore). You might find a color in the silk that you can't get in the real (seasonally) or get a great idea from looking.

I'll post a pic later of a craft project I did that I think looks awesome that's 1 single flower and these weird white leaf things lol

We are using silk flowers for centerpieces as well as BoK...FH is severely allergic to bees and we are having an outside ceremony so to help prevent the bees being attracted we choose silk.

I just put together this silk flower CP. The branches are from Pier 1 and each branch is $12. We made the tealights (5 per CP) for about $6 per CP. Add the vase, and we are talking a total of $75. So, its not 'cheap' but its $100 less than we were quoted for live, and they are 4.5 feet tall!
