My uncle asked me this question and I had no idea what he was talking about. Who is having their garter removed at the ceremony? I have never heard of this before.

Re: Silly ? - Garter removal
I have never heard of it and would be appalled to see the groom going to get the garter during a wedding ceremony.

Thank goodness it is not just me. I would also feel quite embarassed about doing that in front of my Dad.

Re: Silly ? - Garter removal
yes i would be too! if you want to do the garter toss, you could just hand him the garter under the table discreetly or use another garter to toss. i am not doing it though- it will make me uncomfortable and i think guys may not like it either having to herd around to catch some thing.
i am doing bouquet toss though.

Re: Silly ? - Garter removal
FH will remove my garter (tastefully) but he will not throw it. We are having an 'anniversary dance' and the longest married couple will get the boquet and garter and the husband of that couple will then put my garter onto his wife of many years.

Re: Silly ? - Garter removal
we will do the bouquet toss but not the garter toss.
Just a word of caution - if you do decide to do the putting the garter on the person who catches the bouquet can be a BAD experience for the girl
We went to a wedding where the guy who was putting the garter ON was DRUNK and was really skeezy to the girl and she was crying and embarrassed (she was a bm he was a gm) and she was so uncomfortable later that she cried the rest of the night and the bride and groom were sorry they did it.

Re: Silly ? - Garter removal
I'm not a fan of the garter toss and I don't think any of the men coming to my wedding would participate. I'm also skipping the bouquet toss but I find that to be a lot more acceptable than the garter toss. I think it is more popular at wedding for very young couples.
Skip it if you are not comfortable - trust me - nobody will miss it. I've never been to a wedding where they threw the garter anyway.
I think it's done at reception no ceremony if done at all.

Re: Silly ? - Garter removal
I skipped the garter toss b/c I could just picture one of my 11 or 15 year old nieces catching the bouquet and having some guy put a garter on their thigh. No way! I wouldn't want to embarrass them by saying they were too young to participate either.
Thank goodness. My 7 year old niece caught the bouquet!

Re: Silly ? - Garter removal
We are not doing it but basically because we have no single men or women to do the catching so it just seems pointless.
I really am surprised thought by people who have said they've NEVER HEARD OF THIS.

We will determine how many single people are going then go from there. But we want to.

I've certainly heard of it (and have seen it many time), but we are going to pass. We feel it cuts into our dancing time!!

Re: Silly ? - Garter removal
I'm glad to see from the above posts that the garter toss is becoming a thing of the past. I bet the vast majority of your guests will not only not miss it, but will appreciate that they didn't have to sit through it.

Re: Silly ? - Garter removal
I guess I am an outsider. We are doing the it but at the reception. I like both the garter and bouquet toss. I don't know if we will doing the part were the person who caught the garter puts it on the person who caught the bouquet but we are throwing both.

Re: Silly ? - Garter removal
im doing the same as novbride.... doing the removal and throwing both... all the weddings ive been to its been done, and its been a fun crowd of people.. unsure if well have it put on the person, maybe an alternative is to have them dance?
