I was under the impression that your dress is sent to the bridal shop where you ordered it, and then you can come in and try it on and get alterations done, and they hold it for you until the wedding?
However, I keep seeing 'my dress came in!' posts with pictures from peoples houses. Is that just the case if you are going to get your dress altered somewhere else? Does the dress get sent to YOU?
Do places store your dress for you after it's altered?

I had my dress altered at the bridal salon where I bought it. So my dress came in (early!) in May and I went to see it and try it on to make sure it was ok - I left it there. Then in August I went for my first fitting and in September I went for my 2nd. I actually picked up my dress the NIGHT BEFORE my wedding! Which was perfect for me because I was trying to move out of my parents house that week before the wedding and the house was a MESS and I have a dog - so not having the dress too early was important to me.
That said, I have friends that bought their dresses and didn't do alterations where they bought their dress. They just took their dress home when it came in and took it to their seamstress when they were ready.

my dress arrived at the salon---i went to look at it and make sure it was right---then scheduled my fittings.
i didn't take my dress home until 2 days before my wedding

i think it depends on when it comes in, some people get their dress in MONTHS before their wedding or even up to a year before so they keep it at home i guess.
My dress wont get in until march and by the time im finished with alterations it will be close to my wedding so not an issue

I got my dress in October - and they will still hold it for you ( even over a YEAR ) if you are getting alterations there
since i was getting alterations at a different shop ( not by choice ) i picked it up at the first place and brought it to the second place THAT day ( went straight there ) and the second bridal shop held it until I was ready for alterations. ..
they are holding my dress until 1-3 days before the wedding. . . i want it a few days before bc its far for me and i dont want to run around the last day
this way they steam it for you and you just hang it and have it all ready for hte wedding!!

I ordered my dress at Kleinfeld's, but it gets shipped to my house. They told me to take the box (don't open it) to them and then they hold it for me until I'm ready! It's not supposed to arrive at my house until January! They don't want me to open the box in case something is wrong!
